Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Green energy, recycling used as business models - report

Coimbra, Portugal, Nov.19,2023 (Lusa) - Two business projects on the coast of central Portugal are committed to energy transition, the circular economy, combating climate change and adopting renewable energies and augmented reality in the supply of automotive components or transforming waste into detergents as a business model.
Founded in Figueira da Foz, in the district of Coimbra, 36 years ago, Microplásticos supplies components for the automotive industry and has been reconfiguring itself and investing in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
"We have a clear goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. At the moment, we have reduced our carbon footprint by 88% just by switching to green energy. As our production process is mostly based on energy consumption, this transition alone has caused a significant reduction in our carbon footprint," João Marques, director of Microplásticos, told Lusa.
The commitment to renewable energies also included the installation of a large park of photovoltaic panels, which means that between 15% and 20% of the automotive components industry's energy consumption comes from solar energy.
The electrification of the company's car fleet is underway, although with less impact, it was considered to be a necessary measure. The company has declared "open war" on paper at its industrial facilities - it has two in Figueira da Foz and a third in Poland, which was inaugurated in 2018, where a total of 500 people work.
"Not only at the management level in the departments that complement production, but also on the shop floor itself. We digitised everything that was paper," said João Marques.
Microplásticos also has a pilot test, which consists of using augmented reality in its production: "An operator can, using a tablet, point to an assembly line and see, in real images, with text indications, symbology and sequences, what they have to do to correctly set up the process or solve problems," he explained.
"I believe this will be successful, and we want to pass it on to the whole of production," emphasised João Marques, for whom the technology "has advantages for companies".
"And we're taking advantage of it, obviously also using the RRP [Recovery and Resilience Plan] and all those funds that are coming from Europe, to benefit from it and also, always, with a direct impact on the environment," he emphasised.
In a factory where robots predominate and carry out tasks that humans are not allowed to do (such as handling parts at high temperatures or extremely complex and precise operations) and working in a markedly export-oriented sector, João Marques noted that Microplásticos could, for example, make use of recycled materials, but this is a requirement that its customers and car brands don't prioritise.
"This directive should come from the brands and the entire production chain, but the fact is that the customers themselves don't force the use of recycled materials," João Marques told Lusa.
On the other hand, despite the environmental investments made, the costs of emissions in each company's production process "are not taken into account in the allocation of business" by customers.
"So whoever has the cheapest final price wins the deal. It's a bit of a contradiction that, on the one hand, we're working on internal measures to reduce [environmental] impact, but then, on the other hand, there's no directive in the car industry to use recycled materials. We could have been working on this for decades, and we missed a great opportunity to reduce tonnes of CO2 [emissions] into the atmosphere," he observed.
About 50 kilometres to the north, in Vagos, in the district of Aveiro, is the production unit of EcoX, a company based in Penela, Coimbra, which is committed to producing detergents from used cooking oil.
"Oil is a product that causes a lot of environmental problems when it's not disposed of properly. And in Portugal, many people don't even know that there are cooking oil recycling points. People in Portugal are used to using oil to fry potatoes or rissoles, and then they put the oil down the sink or the toilet or, in some places, they make a hole in the ground and put it in. There's a lot of illiteracy in this area," Beatriz Bandeira, EcoX's manager, told Lusa.
Aware of this problem, the company, located on Mistolin's premises, with which it has a partnership in the development of domestic and professional cleaning products - laundry and dishwashing detergents, among others - uses this plant-origin waste, which, after being collected and treated by other EcoX partners, results in a "very rich base, very interesting for detergents", as it incorporates surfactants, substances that interact with water, fats and dirt.
This soap base, in turn, after months or even years of laboratory development, results in new sustainable detergents that are tested with potential customers before reaching the market.
"We have a lot of research time before we arrive at a product. We have to carry out stability tests to see if a product holds up well in extreme heat and cold. We do ageing tests," said Beatriz Bandeira.
Lusa caught a glimpse of some of these laboratory tests, learning about a floor cleaner with a mango scent, another multi-purpose cleaner with a fig scent or a lime and vanilla dishwasher still in the pipeline.
The products under development spend 16 weeks, about four months, in an oven at 40 degrees centigrade (and a fridge at four degrees), which is equivalent, according to the manager, to four years of real-time.
"From time to time, we assess colour, pH [degree of acidity and alkalinity] and smell. Flavours are very important. Detergents sell a lot because of their smell," said Beatriz Bandeira.
EcoX was one of nine companies - out of 86 entities, the vast majority of which were state-owned, that applied for support under the first edition of the Centro Circular Pact, a programme run by the Centro Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDRC).
Isabel Damasceno, president of the CCDRC, told Lusa that there are "requirements and even funds of their own for energy and environmental transformations" in companies.
"If a company wants to make changes to its production process and have savings and advantages from an environmental point of view and energy savings, it will certainly have good and beneficial support for these investments," she said.
On the other hand, she noted that any resistance to environmental investment is changing, not least because compliance with demanding environmental rules is a mandatory condition for accessing public tenders or European funds.
"These are behavioural changes, and behavioural changes can't be achieved overnight. It has to be with successive actions, with awareness-raising, with concrete visibility of the advantages (...). Companies and institutions have to gradually adapt to what is an absolutely indisputable requirement of the present and the future," the president of the CCDRC said.
