Lusa - Business News - Portugal: EU official calls for unity in social values, no one being left behind![]()
Porto, Portugal, May.27,2023 (Lusa) - The European Commissioner for employment and social rights on Friday at the Porto Social Forum, called for Europe to respond with unity and strong values to the challenges of the war in Ukraine and for no one to be left behind. "Now we have new challenging moments with the war in Europe that is having a huge impact not only on Ukraine and its people, but also for us, Europe. We have to show that the European Union is united, strong, with a society of values and that it cannot be sacrificed," said Nicholas Schmit in his opening speech at the Porto Social Forum, which is being held in the city until Saturday. The Porto Social Forum is organised by the government and aims to reaffirm the role of Social Europe and give continuity to the commitments made at the Porto Social Summit held in May 2021, between the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the European Parliament, social partners and civil society, reinforcing the role of the European pillar of social rights and the importance of the action plan, creating synergies for the future of Europe. The European Commissioner for employment and social rights, Nicolas Schmit, highlighted in his opening speech of the Porto Social Forum that "no one can be left behind" and stressed the idea that it is important to give continuity to the commitments made at the Porto Social Summit two years ago. "Since the Summit two years ago, we have outlined action plans. We have adopted several action plans. In some states they are already being implemented, and we must ensure that the initiatives are fully completed," said Nicolas Schmit. It was with a feeling of "optimism" that Nicolas Schmit said he was at the Porto Social Forum today. "This Porto Forum is about the whole of society and social partners and civil society, not just about governments and policies. We have to fight for better rights for all, especially for minorities. Civil society has to be part of this goal. Nobody can be left behind," he said. Nicolas Schmit reiterated that the EU has to ensure continuity of what was started two years ago in Porto. "We cannot stop fighting for better education, we have to invest in people. This is perhaps the biggest lesson. Social is a fundamental investment in our future and to be able to cooperate with global challenges. Social is a geopolitical problem (...) This is a 'win-win' for all and a message that we are a society where democracy is inclusive, democracy is the basis and we cannot leave anyone behind", he reiterated. The Porto Social Forum 2023 event is being held at the Pavilhão Rosa Morta - Super Bock Arena, located in the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal in Porto, until Saturday evening. The Porto Social Summit in May 2021 was one of the highlights of the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union and its main objective was to set the European agenda for the next decade, ensuring that present and future challenges are faced without leaving anyone behind.
