Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Union claims 100% on easyjet strike, 70% says airline

Lisbon, May.26,2023 ( Lusa)- The cabin crew union claims that the easyJet strike in Portugal had 100% adherence this morning, the first day of stoppage, but the company said that about 30% of the scheduled workers appeared for duty.
Speaking to Lusa, Ana Dias, from the board of the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Staff (SNPVAC), said that, similar to what happened in the strike from 1 to 3 April, the adhesion is 100% because the only flights that are being performed correspond to minimum services, except the Lisbon-Porto connection at 19:30, which will be ensured by the heads.
The airline's official source told Lusa that around 30% of the crew members scheduled to work today showed up for duty at their respective airports, meaning that the strike has been adhered to by around 70%.
Dozens of easyJet cabin crew members are demonstrating on Friday at Lisbon airport terminal 1 to demand better working conditions in the first of five days of the strike, which led the company to cancel 385 flights previously.
Speaking to journalists, the president of the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel (SNPVAC), Ricardo Penarroias, insisted on the fact that the company has come close to the demands of workers in other countries over the years, but not in Portugal.
He added that the company wants to give an image that there is no chaos at the airport, devaluing the strike and preferring to cancel flights, and recalled that the strike has already had its impact because only minimum services are being performed.
The easyJet cabin crew strike began today and will be repeated on 28 and 30 May and 1 and 3 June.
The strike covers "all flights by easyJet", as well as the "other services to which the cabin crew are attached", whose "presentation hours occur in the national territory starting at 00:01 and end at 24:00 of each of the days" mentioned, reads the strike notice, released by the union.
When the strike was scheduled, easyJet said it was "extremely disappointed" that the strike had been called, considering the union's proposal for increases of between 63% and 103% "unworkable", and announced it would make changes to flights ahead of the strike to mitigate the impact on customers.
In a statement on 19 May, the SNPVAC guaranteed that "easyJet has previously decided to proceed with massive flight cancellations: of the original 458 flights leaving its Portuguese bases in Lisbon, Porto and Faro, the airline has previously cancelled 384 flights, or 84% of planned flights".
