Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Tourist tax rakes in €1M a month

Praia,May.26,2023(Lusa)-Cabo Verde earned €3 million from the tax paid by tourists in the first quarter, double the amount compared to the same period of 2022, remaining above the amount before the pandemic, according to official figures.
According to a report by the finance ministry on budget execution through March, revenue from the tourist contribution amounted in three months to more than 334 million escudos (€3 million), 35.3% of the government's estimate for 2023, which is 946 million escudos (€8.6 million).
This figure, at a rate of €1 million per month, continues to exceed that recorded in the same period of 2019, before the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on tourism demand, which was then 83 million escudos (€749,000) per month.
This performance also represents a growth of 92.4% compared to the first three months of 2022, whose collection was then 178 million escudos (€1.6 million), which reflects a "substantial increase in tourist demand in the quarter", the report further justifies.
The tourist contribution was introduced in May 2013, with all hotels and similar units required to charge 220 escudos (€2) for each overnight stay of up to 10 days to each tourist over 16 years old. However, that amount increased by 25% in January to 276 escudos (€2.50) per night, as provided for in the State Budget for 2023.

Hotels received a record of 835,945 tourists and over four million overnight stays in 2022, according to data announced at the end of March by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
According to the report on Guest Movements in Cabo Verde in 2022, with tourism statistics produced by the INE, the number of guests last year surpassed the previous record, which was 819,308 tourists in 2019, before the pandemic, and also grew 394% from 169,068 tourists in 2021.
Revenue from the tax compulsorily paid by tourists halved from 2020 to 2021, renewing lows of 145 million escudos (€1.3 million), according to an earlier report by the Finance Ministry. In 2022 they grew to 735.1 million escudos (€6.6 million),
