Lusa - Business News - Macau: Sands China unveils completed The Londoner Macao resort

Macau,China, May.26,2023(Lusa)-Two years after opening the first phase of The Londoner Macao, its giant new resort in Macau, casino operator Sands China has unveiled the complete project, in the presence of former star England footballer David Beckham.
"This is the largest restructuring project on the Cotai," said the president of Sands China Ltd, Wilfred Wong, during an event dubbed 'The journey begins' and which also marks the start of a new 10-year gambling concession, in which the company aims to reaffirm "its commitment to Macau" with a pledge to invest $3.7 billion (€3.5 billion) in the city over the next decade.
"We wanted to be ready to welcome tourists when Macau opens its doors again after the Covid-19 pandemic," Wong added, thanking Macau's government, the company's employees and its founder, Sheldon Adelson, who died aged 87 in January 2021.
Through the development of Cotai, a strip of casinos between the islands of Taipa and Coloane, "Sands China has realised Sheldon Adelson's vision," said Las Vegas Sands president and chief executive Robert G. Goldstein. "Where once there was land reclaimed from water, one of the world's leading tourist destinations has been built with an incredible future ahead."
Goldstein added that the launch of The Londoner Macao and additional investments in non-gambling infrastructure will play an increasingly visible role in Cotai's future growth.
Chinese pianist Lang Lang, Hong Kong singer G.E.M., and Inner Mongolian vocalist Ayanga performed at the new 6,000-seat venue, The Londoner Arena.
British jazz singer and pianist Jamie Cullum performed during dinner, the menu for which included a dish prepared by Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, who is present in this resort with his Chiado restaurant.
With recreations of the Palace of Westminster, the UK parliament, including Big Ben on the façade and an environment decorated with London-themed elements inside, the group invested about $2 billion (€1.8 billion) in the project, which includes six hotels with nearly 6,000 rooms and suites, spa, health clubs, restaurant, shops and a The Londoner Arena, with 6,000 seats.
In 2016, Las Vegas Sands had invested in a resort, The Parisian, with a half-size replica of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and in 2007, in another, The Venetian, a reproduction of the Italian city of Venice, with squares, canals and gondolas, both of them being located in the same area as Cotai.
The ceremony was attended by the vice president of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Macau's first Chief Executive (1999-2009), Edmund Ho Hau-wah, the secretary for economy and finance, Lei Wai Nong, the director of Macau Tourism Services, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, among others.
