Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: President marks Africa Day with call for unity, peace, 'independence'

Sao Tome,May.26,2023(Lusa)-The president of Sao Tome, Carlos Vila Nova, on Friday called for unity and peace among African countries, lamenting that the continent still has armed conflicts that lead to degrading conditions for the population.
Speaking on the occasion of Africa Day, 26 May, Vila Nova said he wanted to "call for peace for all and unity.
"We really need unity: maybe it is one of the big problems we have among African countries," he said. "We cannot, whether at the sub-regional, regional or continental level, have a voice."
Vila Nova argued that Africa Day should serve to reflect and review the not-so-good things that have been done and to look to the future with a view to the "real independence" of countries on the continent, "which is known as a focus of instability" - issues to do the neighbourhood between countries, "maritime piracy, because many or most countries on the continent are bathed by sea," as well as climate change.
"I do not believe that all problems are the same, but most of them are common, and it is an opportunity for each country to look at this aspect and then see to what extent we can share and bring our experiences to the others, and together we can solve the problems," Vila Nova said.
The Sao Tome head of state said that he was concerned that in the 21st century there are still "armed conflicts, displacement of populations, degradation of living conditions" in Africa, when its countries should be concerned with "fighting poverty, knowing and acting better on climate change."
With that in mind, he argued that it is necessary to "look forward and overcome these issues," to "resolve conflicts and look to the future, considering that climate change is increasingly relevant," and should be "the common denominator" for solving other problems.
Sao Tome and Principe last week took over as chair of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa (UNSAC) for a six-month term.
