Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Parliament unanimously approves vote of condolences for Rui Nabeiro![]()
Lisbon, March 24, 2023 (Lusa) - Portugal's parliament on Friday unanimously approved a vote of condolences presented by the speaker following the death of Rui Nabeiro, one of the country's best-known and most respected businessman, from the town of Campo Maior in the Alentejo interior, highlighting his humanism and social conscience. Nabeiro died on Sunday at the age of 91 in a Lisbon hospital. His funeral, which was held on Tuesday in Campo Maior, where his Grupo Nabeiro - Delta Cafés business is based, was attended by Portugal's three top officials: the president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the speaker of parliament, Augusto Santos Silva, and the prime minister, António Costa. With members of Nabeiro's family in the galleries in parliament, even before the vote, Ricardo Pinheiro, a former secretary of state, made an emotional speech about the late businessman that received a standing ovation from all parties. Pinheiro described Nabeiro as "a unique man" with an enormous capacity to "inspire people" with whom he cam into contact. "It happened like this to me," he said. "He inspired Portugal." He stressed that Nabeiro, though an avowed Socialist, above all appreciated understanding across the political spectrum. The parliamentary leader of the right-wing Chega party, Pedro Pinto, also praised Nabeiro, describing him as "a great example for young people" and a towering figure in the country. The resolution proposed by the speaker stresses that Nabeiro was an "extraordinary businessman, gifted with an unusual social sensitivity, who gained the respect and admiration of the Portuguese. "Having only completed primary education, Rui Nabeiro built one of the most successful businesses in Portugal (Delta Cafés), strongly established in his homeland," it continues. "This would already be sufficient reason for public recognition." However, it goes on, "Rui Nabeiro was much more than a traditional businessman. He was someone who had a genuine social conscience and who understood (and practised) business activity as an effort for the common good. "Rui Nabeiro was a great employer, a friend to his workers, a mayor (he was mayor of Campo Maior) and an exemplary citizen," it continues. "A figure whose life path has long been a source of admiration, which should inspire us all." The resolution also highlights the fact that Nabeiro was "a socialist, largely because he grew up in a region, the Alentejo of his childhood, where he said: 'People felt that there was no future for their children'. "This shaped his humanist and solidary profile, his concern for others, in particular for the children of his [region], which he served as a businessman, mayor and citizen," the text recalls. "As has been public and obvious since the news of his death, Rui Nabeiro is missed by so many who had the privilege of knowing him and being touched by his professionalism and generosity." The resolution also notes that Nabeiro received "multiple public distinctions, such as in the attribution, in 1995, by President of the Republic Mário Soares, of the degree of Commander of the Civil Order of Agricultural, Industrial and Commercial Merit - Industrial Class, and, in 2006, by President Jorge Sampaio, of the degree of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique" and that he also received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Évora, Lisbon's Lusófona University and, most recently, the University of Coimbra. PMF/ARO // ARO.
