Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: Portugal's PM visits counterpart on way to CAR

Sao Tome, Feb.3,2023(Lusa)- Portugal's prime minister met on Friday with his counterpart from Soa Tome, Patrice Trovoada, in Sao Tome, where he stopped off before leaving for the Central African Republic (CAR), a meeting that focused on bilateral cooperation.
At the end of the working breakfast with Patrice Trovoava, which lasted about an hour and in which no statements were made to the press, Portugal's support of €15 million last December was highlighted.
"We continue to work on identifying the needs and opportunities facing Sao Tome and Príncipe," the Portuguese prime minister wrote on his Twitter social network account.
Last December, the Portuguese government passed a resolution authorising an extraordinary amount of €15 million to be made available for direct support to Sao Tome and Príncipe's general state budget. Financial support aimed at contributing to development in the sectors of education, health and food security, as well as strengthening democracy and the rule of law.
This grant resulted from a visit to Portugal by the prime minister of Sao Tome and Principe, Patrice Trovoada, on 8 December, when he warned that the archipelago was going through a "critical moment" in economic terms.
António Costa made an official visit to Sao Tome on 19 December, during which he highlighted the "strong ties of cooperation that exist between the two countries and which, in his view, were consolidated with the signing of the Strategic Cooperation Programme between 2021 and 2025.
The Strategic Cooperation Programme (PEC) has an estimated value of €60 million until 2025 and prioritises the areas of health, education and culture, social protection, work and vocational training, justice, security and defence, agriculture, fisheries, energy and environment, public finance, economy and infrastructure.
On his visit to Sao Tome and Principe in December, António Costa highlighted the Health for All cooperation project, launched in 1988 and considered one of the most important of Portuguese cooperation. It has included telemedicine since 2011 and has been extended to speciality areas such as imaging, cardiology, dermatology and ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology and gastroenterology, for a total of 26 specialities.
On 27 September, the Portuguese prime minister, António Costa, praised the people of Sao Tome for the "political maturity" shown in the last elections, but also the ADI (Independent Democratic Action) and its president for the electoral victory.
"I congratulate the people of Sao Tome and Principe for their demonstration of political maturity and democratic vitality. I also congratulate all the parties and candidates, in particular ADI and its president, Patrice Trovoada, for the electoral victory," António Costa wrote on his Twitter social network account.
During his last visit to this country, Costa had dinner with members of the garrisons of the patrol vessel Zaire and the hydrographic ship Dom Carlos, at Espaço Cacau, in Sao Tome.
António Costa then considered that the national forces deployed "fulfil a very important mission for the country, because they help Portugal to project itself internationally, to strengthen its position within the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, but also at the level of bilateral cooperation.
"These missions in Sao Tome and Principe are proof of this, as they contribute to collective security, namely in the Gulf of Guinea - a critical transit point in the Atlantic and to the scientific mission underway as part of the Open Sea programme," he said.
Since the end of last year, Sao Tome and Principe and Portugal have been negotiating the replacement of the Zaire patrol vessel, which is over 50 years old, which has helped to deter crimes in the waters of the archipelago located in the Gulf of Guinea.
The Portuguese Republic Ship (NRP) Zaire has been operating in Sao Tome's waters since January 2018, with a mixed garrison of Portuguese and local military personnel, under a bilateral cooperation agreement.
