Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government 'free-wheeling' - PSD opposition party

Lisbon, Nov.25,2022 (Lusa)-The PSD parliamentary leader on Friday accused the government of being free-wheeling with a succession of cases and the prime minister of "clear loss of authority", but warned that opposition "is not done shouting, insulting, lying".
Speaking at the closing session of the vote on the budget for 2023, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento also accused the PS of being "a self-enclosed majority", which rejected 97% of the opposition's proposals, and considered that although the government is only eight months old it seems "eight years have passed".
"This is a government without political coordination, paralysed by cases and scandals. Scandals that follow each other at an almost weekly rate, and which are increasingly serious. Each new case is worse than the previous one. And they affect the direct authority of the Prime Minister", he criticised, speaking of "successive cases of politically dubious or, at the very least, criticisable contours".
For the PSD leader, "all together" the various cases "call into question the credibility of institutions and undermine the confidence of citizens".
"And that, is what also fuels populism. This is a government in free-wheeling, in accelerated deterioration under the impassive gaze and the acquiescence of a prime minister in clear loss of authority", he accused, saying that António Costa's executive "is limited to sailing within sight of the coast".
The PSD, he said, had played the role of the largest opposition party in the budget debate, presenting "alternative solutions for the country".
"It is not a matter of the fact that the Portuguese government is not the only one in power, it is not the only one in power, it is not the only one in power, it is not the only one in power, it is not the only one in power, it is not the only one in the world", he said, in a speech which was applauded by the benches and which earned a few comments from the GUE group.
Miranda Sarmento said that "in the centre-right, the opposition is made with the 77 PSD deputies, with truth, with serenity, with pragmatism".
PSD President Luís Montenegro arrived at parliament shortly before the start of the closing session, which he is attending from his office in the social-democratic parliamentary group, and did not speak to journalists as he entered.
In his speech, Miranda Sarmento once again listed the marks that the PSD has pointed to the State Budget for 2023, with impoverishment at the head, returning "to the cut of one billion euros" in pensions and decline in the purchasing power of public employees and the private sector, and lack of ambition.
"Instead of catching the front platoon we are after all the broom cart of Europe," he lamented.
Miranda Sarmento also pointed to the PS government what he called the "myth of the right accounts", lamenting that it had not taken better advantage of the favourable international environment between 2016 and 2019.
"But pay attention to what, this week, the European Commission said in its assessment of the Budget and the Government's budgetary policy: that Portugal may be on a path to violate the Commission's prudence budgetary recommendations. Even Brussels is already suspicious of the Socialist illusion", he warned.
The Social Democrat leader also accused the government of, despite public services being "in an almost structural collapse", the Government "squandering taxpayers' money" on the management of companies like TAP and Efacec.
"Two cases that illustrate well the socialist 'zig zag' policy (...) In TAP, in 2015, it was the zig zag policy, in which TAP was like the caravels of the 15th century. After the 2015 privatisation, it was the turn of the zag, with the reversal of the privatisation by this government in 2016, with the state taking the risks," he criticised, considering that currently "it is complete bewilderment" about the future of the company's situation, in which €3.2 billion has already been invested.
Also in Efacec, he said, "the government has already buried €170 million of taxpayers' money in the company and, with the failure of privatisation, is preparing to bury another few hundred million euros of Portuguese money".
"There is no doubt about one conclusion common to these two cases: with other people's money it is very easy to be socialist", he criticised, also classifying the execution of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) as "a lot of grapes and not much wine".
Joaquim Miranda Sarmento considered that the last "more than 20 years of economic stagnation are not a fatality" and argued that "the country does not have to resign" and that the PSD is ready to be an alternative.
"He said that if the country is today more in the tail of Europe and with fewer prospects for the future, this is mainly due to the wrong policies of the Socialist Party. The PS only wants to be in power, but without being a government, incapable of making the reforms and structural changes that the country needs", he concluded.
