Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: National flag carrier to lease A3200 from Malta-based Airhub

Praia, Sept. 27, 2022 (Lusa) - Malta-based Airhub Airlines has announced the signing of a contract with Cabo Verde Airlines - the trading name adopted by Transportes Aereos de Cabo Verde (TACV) - for the Cabo Verde state-owned carrier to lease an Airbus A320-200 from the Maltese airline, adding to the Boeing aircraft that it already has leased from Angola's TAAG.
In a statement that Lusa has seen, Airhub Airlines said that the deal was an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) contract, in which the company provides all the means for flights to be carried out by the chartered aircraft, which in this case has the registration number 9H-GTS and has been operating for 12 years.
"Our partnership with Cabo Verde Airlines cements the position of Airhub Airlines as a provider of ACMI services around the world," the statement quoted Haris Coloman, director of the Maltese company, which specialises in aircraft leasing, charter flights and cargo transport operations, as saying.
The statement did not provide figures or the period of this aircraft leasing contract.
TACV, which does not have its own fleet and only resumed flights last December, after being nationalised due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in March reached an agreement with Angola's TAAG to lease a Boeing 737-700, which it is already using to fly to and from Portugal, the most active route.
In March 2019, the Cabo Verde state sold 51% of TACV for €1.3 million to Lofleidir Cabo Verde, a company 70% owned by Loftleidir Icelandic EHF (Icelandair group, which took 36% of Cabo Verde Airlines) and 30% by Icelandic entrepreneurs with experience in the aviation sector (who took the remaining 15% of the privatised 51% share). However, after the shutdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the state took over the 51% position in TACV on 6 July 2021, alleging several management defaults, and currently holds 90% of the shares.
The state is to inject 1 billion escudos (€9.1 million) annually into TACV to ensure the stability and recovery of the airline, before reprivatising it in 2024, the minister of transport and transport, Carlos Santos, announced on Friday.
"By 2024, is our forecast to stabilise the company, to have the company attractive so that it can be privatised," the minister announced, confirming that in the government's accounts an overall injection of 3 billion escudos is planned over three years, including 2022.
The government's plan is to privatise TACV after three years of direct support. Part of the €9.1 million planned for this year, according to the minister, has already been used, namely to pay salaries at the company.
"This is the goal that we have defined: 2024" for privatisation, the minister said at a news conference to take stock of the cabinet meeting held the previous day, in which the draft resolution was approved authorising the state as shareholder to "make available" to TACV "financial resources to ensure the stability of the company."
The option to invest over €27 million in three years to maintain and grow the company, the minister noted, was already provided for in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and is "in line with the tourism policy" of the government of "diversification of the sector and of supply," which requires "inducing diversification in demand."
TACV has resumed operations, after suspending all activity in March 2020 due to the pandemic, initially with flights only between Praia and Lisbon, since the end of December. With the airline currently having only one aircraft, flights were extended this year from the islands of São Vicente and Sal to the Portuguese capital.
At the time, Santos also said that the leasing of a second aircraft was on the table, in order to maintain the focus on international growth.
"For all this we want to reprivatise this company, stabilise it, so that when there are calm waters in Cabo Verde and worldwide we can have the possibility of re-privatising this company and continue to serve the country, building the concept of the platform with its epicentre on Sal island," he said.
