Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Autumn fruit in EU, including Portuguese,highly tainted with pesticides-report

Lisbon, Sept. 27, 2022 (Lusa) – Autumn fruit in Europe, including Portuguese fruit, is "highly contaminated" with dangerous pesticides, according to a report by non-governmental organisation Pesticides Action Network Europe (PAN Europe), released on Tuesday.
Based on official data, the report indicates that a large proportion of European pears (49%), table grapes (44%), apples (34%), plums (29%) and raspberries (25%) were sold with pesticide residues linked to increased risk of cancer, birth deformities, heart disease and other serious health problems.
The organisation even notes that most of the pesticides in question are a threat even if in very low doses.
The document, entitled "Pesticide Paradise", points out that Portuguese pears were among the most contaminated (68 per cent), behind Belgian (71 per cent) and Dutch (70 per cent) pears. Among the least contaminated were Romanian, Latvian and Swedish pears.
For apples, Dutch apples were the most contaminated, almost three quarters (71%), followed by Greek apples (54%). In the case of Portuguese apples, half of them (50%) were contaminated. Without pesticides were Norwegian, Slovenian and Swedish apples.
For raspberries, Portugal was much better placed than the worst ranked, Norway, with 61% contamination. The figure for Portuguese raspberries was 11%.
Also according to PAN Europe data, almost half of the Hungarian and Greek plums were contaminated, while Greek and Italian grapes were the most polluted (56% and 47% respectively). On Portugal, for these fruits, data for a "reliable overview of the possible contamination" was lacking.
PAN Europe analysed 44,137 fresh fruit samples tested by governments between 2011 and 2020 and concluded that the situation regarding pesticides has worsened, and that the contamination of apples, pears and plums has almost doubled since 2011, increasing by 110%, 107% and 81% respectively.
In 2020, a third (33%) of all fruits tested were contaminated, while in 2011 the figure was no more than 20%.
The document recalls that the European Union passed two laws in 2009 to phase out the most toxic pesticides and get farmers to use alternatives, and adds that the "phasing out of pesticides has failed" because governments follow guidelines that were written in partnership with big chemical companies, which "achieve the opposite of what the law intended", promoting the pesticides of these companies.
Pedro Horta, from the Portuguese environmental organisation Zero, an entity that is part of PAN Europa, also says, quoted in the document, that fruit is becoming increasingly contaminated because "the industry is writing the rules" and non-chemical solutions are being ignored.
"The European Commission had known about the failure of the phase-out since at least 2018, but has not taken any significant action," PAN Europe accuses, adding in the report's conclusions that it is as if, "instead of taking a step towards toxin-free agriculture, the European Union (EU) is taking a step towards fully toxic agriculture," regardless of the recent strategy known as "From meadow to plate."
The report reveals, says the NGO, that there is no shortage of alternatives but that the problem is that the pesticide industry has neutralised this substitution and the EU and the member states are following a guidance document that is actually the industry's position.
PAN Europe is calling for a revision of the guidance document so that a new one is implemented by the end of next year and the substitution principle becomes effective, with the member states adopting a national plan and reviewing all pesticide authorisations which have alternatives, detailed information which they must then give to citizens.
PAN Europe was set up in 1983 and is a network of European NGOs promoting sustainable alternatives to pesticides, working in particular to widely reduce pesticide use and promote organic and sustainable farming.
The report now published comes just 60 years after the publication of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring, which documented the harmful effects of pesticides.
Since the publication of the book on 27 September 1962, the use of pesticides has increased and the extinction of species pushed by these products is happening 1,000 times faster than normal, says PAN Europe, leaving yet another fact: it is estimated that diseases linked to pesticides cost Europeans up to 32 billion euros a year.
