Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Focus on Spain flag carrier Iberia 'natural' for Porto airport - association

Porto, May.27,2022(Lusa)– The Portuguese association of hotels, restaurants and tourism (AHPORT) said on Friday it was "natural" for the president of the national tourism authority, Luís Araújo, to focus on Iberia as a strategic partner and on Madrid as an international connecting airport.
Luís Araújo encouraged the region to focus strategy on the routes and programme of that company in Madrid, Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias, JN, reported on Thursday, following a meeting with agents from the region, where criticism of TAP's strategy for the North centred the debate.
In a statement sent to the press, the president of AHPORT stressed that "business owners in the tourism sector can only be pleased with this recommendation, which reflects not only a real concern with the growth and affirmation of tourism in the country and, in particular, in the North region, but also a healthy view of the role that Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport should play in this equation.
According to Rodrigo Pinto de Barros, "APHORT has long publicly argued that the northern region cannot be held hostage by TAP. The search for alternatives to this airline should be a natural decision and the businessmen in the sector are ready to support it. It is up to the government to guarantee the necessary means so that Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport can negotiate with other operators".
"As this is the national airport with the largest catchment area in the country, covering the north and part of central Portugal and even Galicia, this is a question that should be assessed in the eyes of the national interest, insofar as it goes far beyond the interests of Porto and the northern region," he added.
Rodrigo Pinto de Barros emphasised that "the need to keep Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport competitive and appealing at an international level must be seen as an unavoidable point with regard to the priorities for the development of tourism. It is essential that this issue forms part of the national agenda once and for all".
JN reported that Portugal's Tourism chairman, Luís Araújo, encouraged those present to support Iberia as a strategic partner and Madrid as an international airport, rather than wait for the Portuguese flag carrier.
The meeting was organised by the Porto and North Tourism Board, which has accused TAP of undervaluing the region, and was attended by the secretary of state for tourism, Rita Marques, according to the northern daily newspaper, which said that Portugal Tourism is developing "work with Iberia to make the destinations of Porto and Lisbon even more attractive for passengers connecting in Spain," highlighting, however, the "essential" role of TAP, with which there is still "much work to be done".
Lusa reported on Thursday that a regional working group will define mechanisms and incentives to attract new operators to Francisco Sá Carneiro airport and present proposals to the government to strengthen air connectivity in the North region.
The working group includes the chairmen of the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N), the Porto City Council, the Maia City Council, the Northern Regional Council, the Porto and Northern Portugal Tourism Board (TPNP) and the Portuguese Business Association (AEP).
"The first objective is to find sustainable solutions for the compensation of routes and lines not operated by TAP in the North, namely to the United States, Europe and the Middle East," a source from the working group told Lusa.
