Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Construction of new €27M Mindelo cruise ship terminal to start tomorrow

Mindelo,Jan.18,2022(Lusa)-Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, launches on Wednesday, in São Vicente, the construction work of the Mindelo Cruise Terminal, costing almost 27 million euros, in charge of a Portuguese-Cape Verdean consortium.
A source from the executive confirmed to Lusa on Tuesday that the ceremony will take place in Mindelo, starting at 10am local time (11am in Lisbon), with the presence of the head of government.
The Portuguese-Cape Verdean consortium made up of Mota-Engil and Empreitel Figueiredo companies will build the Mindelo Cruise Terminal, one of the largest public works of recent years in Cabo Verde, as announced on 15 April, 2021.
"Having obtained the 'non-objection' of the project's financiers, the signing of the contract with the selected contractor will take place in the coming days," public company Enapor, which manages the archipelago's ports, announced in a statement, adding that the work will be awarded for 26,483,603 euros and has an estimated completion time of 22 months.
"The work will involve constructing an embankment, called the 'Land Bridge', of 2,700 square metres, dredging approximately 124,000 cubic metres in the port basin and access channel and the rehabilitation of quay nine, which will now serve small recreational vessels," Enapor added.
"It also involves construction of a 400-metre-long docking pier, with a depth of 11 metres to the north and nine metres to the south, as well as a passenger terminal with an area of 900 square metres and respective external development, including a car park.
"With this project, Mindelo will have an innovative, modern cruise terminal with very advanced technical features," Enapor said.
Due to the pandemic, cruise ship tourism was paralysed, but some countries have gradually retaken up the activity, "and it is expected that, with the construction of the Mindelo Cruise Terminal and the improvement of sanitary conditions worldwide, the country will receive around 200,000 cruise ship tourists per year.
This work is co-financed by the ORIO Fund, from the Netherlands, and by the OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries) Fund for International Development.
Lusa reported today that eight ports in Cabo Verde in 2021 handled over 11,000 tourists on cruise ships, a number that the pandemic reduced by 41 percent compared to 2020, accumulating the second consecutive sharp annual drop.
According to the annual traffic report prepared by Enapor, the public company responsible for managing the archipelago's ports, 30 cruise ships were handled in port calls in the country in 2021, down 11 compared to 2020.
In 2019, the busiest year in tourist demand before the effects of the pandemic, Cape Verdean ports received 149 cruise ship movements and 48,500 tourists.
That tourist movement fell by more than 60 percent in 2020, to 18,872 tourists and 41 ships, and by 41 percent more in 2021, according to Enapor data.
