Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Country sending 52 firms, seven regional boards to Madrid tourism fair

Lisbon, Jan. 18,2022 (Lusa) - Portugal will participate in the Madrid International Tourism Fair (Fitur), between 19 and 23 January, with a total of 52 companies, seven regional tourism boards and the national tourist office, according to a statement from the latter.
"Portugal is participating in the 42nd edition of Fitur, the largest tourism fair in the Spanish market and one of the most important worldwide, which takes place from 19 to 23 January in Madrid," the national Turismo de Portugal said in a statement, noting that this year, "in a visible collective effort of recovery, national participation is considerably more expressive in number of companies than in the previous year, with the participation of 52 companies, the seven tourism regions and Turismo de Portugal."
According to the same note, the national stand, "with an area of 682 square meters, was designed to provide a great visual impact on the fair space." It added that Fitur will see the presentation to the Spanish market of the project 'Journey to Portugal Revisited' "which, under the commemorations of the centenary of Saramago and curated by the writer José Luís Peixoto, proposes to revisit the itineraries of the author's work and invites contemporary writers to be inspired in these places.
"On that same occasion the name of the Spanish writer participating in the project will also be revealed," it adds, noting that the project "results from the partnership between Turismo de Portugal and the José Saramago Foundation and will be one of the anchors for the promotion of Literary Tourism in 2022."
Portugal's participation in Fitur will include the secretary of state for tourism, Rita Marques, and the president of the national tourist office, Luís Araújo, where, "in addition to visiting the Portugal stand, they will meet with companies and the trade [sector] and maintain contact with the main market players," according to the statement.
Quoted in the same statement, Rita Marques stressed that "the presence of Turismo de Portugal at the 42nd edition of Fitur has the main aim of reactivating Spanish tourist flows and offset the fall in tourism caused by the pandemic crisis," adding that "the Spanish market is one of the big bets in 2022."
For its part, the national tourist office noted: "Despite the pandemic context and the reduction in the levels of international demand, in 2020 Spain positioned itself as the 1st tourism market for Portugal measured by the guests indicator, with a record of 763,400 guests who generated 1,686,000 overnight stays (3rd in this indicator).
"In 2021 the trend is maintained," it adds. "According to the latest figures available - for November 2021 - the number of guests was 1,058,900 (35.7 percent more than in November 2020) and overnight stays reached 2,444,500, a figure 41.7 percent higher than in November 2020." Fitur, one of the largest tourism trade fairs in the world, is to host almost 7,000 companies from the sector from 107 countries.
According to the organiser, IFEMA (Feria Internacional de Madrid), which presented the 42nd edition of the fair to the media last week, the five-day event will have 600 exhibitors and 6,933 companies taking part, with the Dominican Republic being the event's partner country.
The Madrid fair is largely aimed at generating confidence in the market, encouraging the travel sector and highlighting the importance of business tourism, after almost two years in which the sector was among the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, IFEMA notes, adding that it hopes it will be "a hopeful and unequivocal sign of the potential of an industry that needs to resume the normality of an activity that has demonstrated in recent months its great resilience."
