Lusa - Business News - Portugal: More than 280 killed on roads in nine months

Lisbon,Nov.24,2021(Lusa)-More than 280 people died on Portuguese roads in the first nine months of the year,according to the latest report by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), which recorded more than 20,400 accidents with victims in mainland Portugal.
According to the road accident and supervision report for the first nine months of 2021, there were 20,476 accidents with victims in mainland Portugal, resulting in 284 fatalities, 1,491 serious injuries and 23,938 minor injuries.
Compared to the same period in 2020, there was a reduction in fatalities, 18 fewer(-6%) and an increase in serious injuries, 120 more and minor injuries, 1,109 more. Accidents with victims increased by 4.5%, 878 more.
Comparing the figures between January and September 2021 with the average of these nine months of the previous five years (2016 to 2020), ANSR pointed to reductions in the totals of all the main indicators: accidents (-14.7%), fatalities (-18.2%), serious injuries (-6.3% ) and minor injuries (-17.3%).
Collisions were the most frequent type of accident (53.3%), although they were only responsible for 39.8% of fatalities. Skidding, which represented 35.2% of all accidents, accounted for 48.2% of deaths and 42.3% of serious injuries.
According to the ANSR report, on streets (64.0% of accidents), fatalities decreased by 7.6% and serious injuries increased by 12.2%. On national roads, where 18.5% of accidents occurred, fatalities decreased by 2.1% and serious injuries increased by 5.5%.
Over 71% of those killed were drivers.
