Lusa - Business News - EU/Presidency: Entrepreneurs, unicorns want digital autonomy for a more competitive ecosystem

Lisbon, June 21,2021 (Lusa) - National associations of member states in the area of entrepreneurship and European 'unicorns' on Monday pointed to "innovative technological solutions" and "digital autonomy" as the way forward for a "stronger and more competitive" European entrepreneurial ecosystem.

According to a note from the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), these officials also highlighted the "green and sustainable economy" and "access to funding and talent" as "necessary areas for action" for the future of "startups" and "unicorns" (startups valued at over €1 billion).

These issues were discussed at the virtual conference "EU Next Generation Innovators Summit", which also included the participation of the minister of economy and digital transition, Pedro Siza Vieira, the European commissioner for innovation, Mariya Gabriel, and Portugal's secretary of state for digital transition, André de Aragão Azevedo.

Pointing out the entrepreneurial ecosystem as "a clear inducer of economic growth and key to Europe's recovery", Pedro Siza Vieira highlighted the Portuguese presidency's commitment to this agenda as a way for the EU to "converge with the other leading regions".

The minister said that the "Startup Nations Standards" declaration, signed by more than 20 countries in March on Digital Day, was "a significant step towards increasing the operation and presence of startups".

Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said, "With the reports from the EU Unicorns Group and the Innovation Ecosystems Leaders Group, and the broad consensus found at today's conference, the agenda is starting to become clearer on how to build a pan-European innovation ecosystem that leaves no one behind and focuses on startups with solutions based on Advanced/Disruptive Technology.
