Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Air passenger traffic falls 86% in April compared to 2019 - INE

Lisbon, June 21, 2021 (Lusa) - Portugal's airports received 739,000 passengers in April, 86% less than in the same month of 2019, but higher than in April 2020, when the pandemic stopped traffic at airports, Statistics Portugal (INE) said on Monday.
The April air transport statistics, released by the INE, record the movement of 739,400 passengers (boardings, disembarkations and direct transits) and 14,000 tonnes of cargo and mail, decreasing 86% and 18.2%, respectively, compared to the same month of 2019, before the pandemic.
For passengers who landed and embarked on international flights between January and April 2021, France was the top country of origin and destination for flights, followed by Switzerland and Germany, according to the data.
Also in April, 6,500 aircraft landed at domestic airports on commercial flights, a decrease of 66.9 per cent compared to April 2019.
"Air transport continues to register traffic still far from the pre-pandemic values," said the institute, specifying that 62.3% of passengers landed at national airports in April corresponded to international traffic (85.7% in the same period), mostly from airports located on the European continent (52.2%).
As for embarking passengers, INE recorded 59.8% corresponding to international traffic (87.7% in the same period), with the main destination being airports located in the European continent (51.1%).
"Comparing the number of aircraft landed and the number of passengers disembarked daily between January and April 2021 with the same period in 2020, in the second half of March, which in homologous terms coincides with the beginning of the restrictions adopted at the level of airspace due to the pandemic, specifically in the last days of the month, there is a reversal of the trend and growth of both indicators, which continued during April," it said.
Between January and April 2021, there was a 5.6% decrease in cargo and mail handled at domestic airports (-13.5% in 2020), with cargo movement at Lisbon airport accounting for 66.1% of the total, reaching 34.7 thousand tonnes (-11.6% year-on-year), and the remaining airports as a whole increasing by 9%.
