Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Ten new electric vehicles for government members

Praia, June.21,2021(Lusa)- The Cabo Verdean government has approved the purchase of ten fully electric vehicles for the new government members, as part of the target of 30% of new public administration vehicles being electric by 2026.

A cabinet resolution of 18 June, to which Lusa had access today, approved the purchase of ten fully electric vehicles through a leasing contract.

The decision also states that the new vehicles are intended for the "new members of the government," which was sworn in about a month ago, after legislative elections on 18 April, which has increased to 28 members.

The Cabo Verdean government has set a target of having a quarter of the national vehicle fleet of electric vehicles by 2026, which rises to 30% in vehicles to be acquired by the public administration.

The government programme for the new legislature (2021-2026), discussed on 14 June in parliament, the same day the parliament voted in favour of the confidence motion presented by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, foresees the implementation of the Policy Letter for Electric Mobility nationwide.

This implementation will be made, according to the document, "through a broad programme aiming at the replacement of a quarter of the national fleet, including passenger transport, school transport, minibuses and taxis with electric vehicles by 2026".

It will also make it mandatory to acquire vehicles for public administration, heads of government and members of government that "at least 30%" are electric vehicles.

"The government will strengthen measures to increase the installation of charging infrastructures for electric vehicles, with operating licenses for private operators on all islands and the creation, installation and operation of a platform for management (information and licensing of operators) of electric mobility in Cabo Verde," the document also points out, with the executive's commitments for the legislature.

It is also planned to encourage and promote electric mobility in the maritime economy through the acquisition of electric motors, including batteries and panels, for fishing vessels.

The government also commits to moving forward with the reform of the organisational structure of the country's energy market through the "implementation of the new structure of the organisation of the electricity sector through vertical separation and the creation of the National System Operator and Universal Buyer of the energy produced by independent producers.

"This new entity, the heart of the electricity system, will ensure transparent operation of the dispatch of producers, as well as the system of control and management of financial flows within the value chain," the government, which continues to be led by Ulisses Correia e Silva, said in the document for the legislature, which began in May.
