Lusa - Business News - Portugal: 'Good history of European funds', low level of fraud - Costa

Lisbon, June.21,2021(Lusa) - Portugal's prime minister said on Monday the country has a history of good use of European funds, with high economic impact and low levels of fraud and irregularities, and criticized the attitude of self-flagellation in this area.

These positions were transmitted by António Costa at the opening session of a conference on European funds, at Culturgest, in Lisbon, following the president of the Court of Auditors (TdC), José Tavares, and the president of the European TdC, Klaus Heine Lenhe.

With European Commissioner Elisa Ferreira sitting in the front row of the audience, Costa said: "We have a track record to be proud of and not to beat ourselves up concerning the use of funds.

"That is not how Europe sees us. There is no reason to see us differently," Costa stressed in the middle of a speech lasting about 30 minutes.

Costa presented positive indicators, both concerning the low levels of fraud and irregularities in the use of community funds and the structural economic impact and absorption capacity of these European funds.
