Lusa - Business News - EU/Presidency: Foreign ministers meet in Luxembourg to discuss Belarus

Luxembourg, June 21,2021 (Lusa) - European foreign ministers are meeting on Monday in Luxembourg, with many items on the agenda, including another discussion on Belarus, preceded by an informal breakfast with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, representative of Belarusian pro-democratic forces.

During this discussion, the 27 are expected to approve the fourth package of restrictive measures aimed at the Minsk regime led by Alexander Lukashenko, after earlier this month adopting the decision to close airspace and airports to Belarusian aircraft, following the forced hijacking of a commercial Ryanair flight between Athens and Vilnius for the arrest of activist Roman Protasevich.

In the only EU ministerial council whose work is not led by the six-monthly rotating presidency of the EU Council - but by the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell - Portugal, which is preparing to 'pass the baton' to Slovenia on 30 June, will be represented at the Luxembourg meeting by Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva.

According to a note issued on Sunday by the ministry of foreign affairs, among other major issues on the agenda are the partnership with Latin America and the Caribbean and the situation in Iraq, with an exchange of views scheduled with the head of Iraqi diplomacy, Fuad Hussein.

In current affairs, the 27 will discuss the EU's relationship with Turkey, Russia, the latest developments in Mali, Ethiopia and the Middle East Peace Process, and Borrell's recent visits to Indonesia, the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Lebanon.
