Lusa - Business News - East Timor, New ferry launched today, expected in Dili in September

Dili,May.10,2021(Lusa)-A new passenger ferry that will link Dili and several areas of East Timor, christened 'Berlin-Ramelau', launched in China on Monday, is expected to arrive in Dili in September, officials said.

"The initial plan was to be completed in April, but production was affected by the pandemic, but the new schedule is confirmed," Flavio Cardoso Neves, president of the Timorese port authority, Aportil told Lusa.

Flávio Neves was speaking to Lusa after taking part in a virtual meeting in which he witnessed the ship's launch, built under a cooperation agreement between Germany and East Timor, at the shipyard of Dutch company Damen in Yichang, China.

The ship's construction is expected to be concluded during July. The new ferry, which will connect Díli and the enclave of Oecusse and Ataúro island, could be in the Timorese capital in September.

Designed by IMS Nord, in cooperation with Aportil, the vessel is 67 metres long, 16 metres wide and has a draught of 3.3 metres.

With a deck height of 4.8 metres and a maximum speed of 10 to 12 knots, the ship will have a capacity to carry 380 people and more than 940 tonnes of cargo, with a crew of 16.

Neves highlighted the work that involved several partners in allowing the logistically complex project to move forward, with participation from several countries.

"The owner is East Timor, the shipyard is Dutch, the partner is the German government and KfW, the consultants, IMS-Nord, are also from Germany, the engines are Japanese, and the construction is being done in China," he said.

"Some look at the oceans as barriers, but for us, they are a path that unites us and allows us to move forward. Oceans of possibility. And another step towards our development," he said.
