Lusa - Business News - Macau: Tourism picks up as visitors from mainland make most of discounts, safety

Macau, China, May 10, 2021 (Lusa) - Tourism in Macau continues to increase steadily, with visitors interviewed by Lusa saying that they chose the territory to visit during the 'golden week' of multiple holidays in China because of the discounts on offer and because it is a safe destination in terms of Covid-19.
According to official data, between 1 and 5 May a total of 167,000 people visited Macau, the world's gambling capital, with hotels recording an occupancy rate of 83.5%. The average daily number of visitors was up 25.4% from April.
On 1 May, Macau broke its record for daily visitor numbers since the start of the pandemic, with 45,000 people arriving in the territory. The previous record had been recorded on 16 April, of 34,353.
"The passenger volume and accommodation rate have increased significantly," stated the authorities.
Nevertheless, daily number of visitors on these holidays is just 21.1% of that recorded in the last year before the pandemic.
Stephen Anderson, owner of the Cathedral Café restaurant and bar, told Lusa that he has noticed more people out on the streets, mainly young people eager "for traditional Portuguese food, wine and architecture" in the former colony.
"We see a younger crowd, twenty-somethings, and that's more vibrant," he said. "They would have gone to Lisbon, they would have gone to Sydney, they would have gone to Bangkok, but as they can't go for now, Macau is a very positive alternative."
Lu and Wang, two friends aged 25 and 24 from the province of Jiangsu, in eastern China, near Shanghai, chose Macau to spend their holidays during the year's first golden week because they felt that the territory had done a great job in preventing the spread of Covid-19.
Macau has not recorded a single local case of the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19 for more than 400 days, and is considered one of the world's safest regions from that point of view. It has had only 49 cases of the virus in all and no deaths from Covid-19.
"Of course, we only came to Macau based on the situation of Macau being very safe," Wang told Lusa as she strolled with her friend on the Portuguese paving in the famous Senado Square in the heart of the historic centre of the former Portuguese colony.
Visitors from mainland China do not need to spend time in quarantine when entering Macau, and vice versa, thanks to the success on both sides in controlling the pandemic. That is not yet the case with neighbouring Hong Kong, which despite good results is still having new coronavirus cases daily.
"Because the issuance of the safe conduct [visa] is suspended in Hong Kong, and Macau has done a better job in measures to prevent the epidemic, so we can enter and travel more freely," Lu explained.
A few metres from the Leal Senado, the eponymous manager of the Poon Vai Kei cake shop told Lusa that there was a significant increase in tourists: "This street has more tourists walking around, more than before."
Among the thousands of tourists from the mainland in the historic centre of Macau were also two young women from Shanghai, Su and Sun, who said that they had come because Macau was at the moment the most convenient, safe and affordable destination.
"When we arrived here, we found that really all the people here wear masks when they go out, so we feel even safer," 25-year-old Su explained to Lusa.
"In Shanghai, when we do the nucleic acid test, we can get the report the next day," explained her friend Sun, 29. "With the result we can stay in Macau for seven days, because the validity is seven days. It is very convenient, so we chose to come here."
She added that the fact that Air Macau has direct flights to the territory and that quarantine was not necessary were also factors.
The Macau authorities, along with Air Macau and others, have been promoting discounts on air fares and accommodation as well as and staging several actions to promote tourism in the city, the next to be held 13-17 May in Nanjing, portraying Macau as a "healthy and safe" Covid-19 destination.
The message seems to have got through to Sun, at any rate: "The Macau Tourism Bureau strengthens measures regarding benefits for mainland China visitors, including hotel and air tickets."
All over the city centre Macau tourism campaigns were visible announcing that visitors could get discounts at various establishments with a QR code.
"Now there are some policies in Macau, like the airline tickets, buy one get one free, and the fifty percent hotel discount vouchers, it was a good deal, so we chose Macau," concluded Su.
