Lusa - Business News - Portugal: New fashion, textile museum in Gaia, Porto to be inaugurated on 20 May

Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal,May 10,2021(Lusa)-The new Porto Fashion & Fabric Museum, which is to be inaugurated on 20 May in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the River Douro in Porto district, cost €10 million and was planned and built in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.
According the project's coordinator, Catarina Jorge, it was a "Herculean task" in such a time to execute the "construction, interior architecture, contents and collection" for the new institution, which aims to showcase both the textile industry and auteur fashion and which is to open to the public at noon on the day of its inauguration.
The museum will display collections in an area of some 2,000 square meters, over two floors, in a part-new, par-refurbished block at WOW - the World of Wine - in the heart of the old town centre of Vila Nova de Gaia, in the district of Porto, amid the city's port wine lodges.
On the first floor, relating to the textile industry in Portugal, visitors can learn about the sector's importance in the development of Portugal's North region, as well as in the national economy. Displays include a timeline with the most important dates in the history of the industry, from the 16th century to the present day.
There is also a shuttle loom from the 1910s, illuminated advertisements alluding to old textile factories, linen seeds and items from the old Têxtil Riopele and Têxtil Manuel Gonçalves companies, featuring thread bobbins, thread tension gauges, drafting machines, fabric samples and a trend book.
Still on the first floor are several workshops and a display presenting the production processes from spinning, debuxing, weaving, dyeing, to making and displaying. Here two short films made by arts students from the University of Beira Interior, on the textile industry, are also being screened.
The second floor is dedicated to designer fashion in Portugal, footwear made in Portugal and the art of filigree - a traditional local craft of welding fine metal wires in order to compose a design. Here visitors will be able to appreciate iconic pieces by Portuguese designers, from the 1980s to the present day.
There is an area dedicated to pioneering designers from Portugal, where works by Eduarda Abbondanza and Mário Matos Ribeiro, Ana Salazar, José António Tenente, João Tomé and Francisco Pontes or Manuela Gonçalves stand out. Then there is a room dedicated to designers from Portugal who are known nationally and internationally, including Miguel Vieira, Luís Buchinho, Nuno Baltazar, Fátima Lopes, Maria Gambina, Filipe Faísca, Luís Carvalho, Anabela Baldaque, Diogo Miranda, Hugo Costa, Alexandra Moura, Ricardo Preto and Carlos Gil, among many others.
Then there is also a space dedicated to emerging designers, discovered on the Bloom and Sangue Novo platforms of the fashion events Portugal Fashion and Moda Lisboa respectively, such as Estelita Mendonça and Gonçalo Peixoto.
Footwear is not forgotten, with a space where an assembly line of male and female footwear is displayed, with the whole process from initial sketch, in the form of several drawings on paper, to the materialisation, with material provided by designers Luis Onofre and Carlos Santos and the Footwear Technology Centre of Portugal.
One of the highlights, according to the museum's coordinator, is a room of "curiosities of Portuguese fashion", featuring items such as a pair of "fish slippers" made of rubber by Lisbon-based designer Lidija Kolovrat, a "vintage" hem gauge, pieces to open seams, a porcelain wig by Nuno Gama, a necklace by Ricardo Preto made of shell and bone, with crystals, a knitted backpack by Susana Bettencourt, and trainers produced with natural and artificial hair by Olga Noronha.
Jorge stressed that sustainability and recycling in the fashion and textile businesses were also a subject of reflection in the new museum, given the need to "train the new generations to be careful in the purchase of articles" and in how they "consume fashion".
The new museum, which was designed by the architect Vitor Miranda with Studio Astolfi, is part of a larger project, composed of five others: The Wine Experience, Porto Region Across the Ages, Planet Cork, The Chocolate Story and The Bridge Collection, dedicated to the ritual of drinking, with a vast collection of glasses.
All six museums are a stone's throw from the River Douro in the WOW complex in the historic centre of gAIA . Around €106 million was invested in the whole complex, according to those responsible.
The Porto Fashion & Fabric Museum, as well as the other museums at WOW, have been talking to schools in the region to "promote knowledge" and "bring visitors to the museums", says Jorge, adding that before the current school year is ended it should be possible to bring many groups of pupils in to visit the new institution.
"The ideal is for them to come and understand all the complexity and density of the knowledge we have in the museum," she said, expressing pride in the fact that it was possible to build and open the new museum during the pandemic.
The Porto Fashion & Fabric Museum, which also has a restaurant, had been scheduled to open on 28 November 2020, but due to lockdown measures and other restrictions, the inauguration was first postponed to 12 December and then again to 2021, again because of the pandemic. It is now finally set to open to the public on 20 May.
Worldwide, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 3,230,058 deaths worldwide. The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
