Lusa - Business News - Macau: Region's economy to grow 61.2% this year as casino revenues surge - IMF

Macau, China, April 7, 2021 (Lusa) - Macau's economy should grow by 61.2% this year, after shrinking 56.3% last year due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the latest World Economic Outlook released by the International Monetary Fund.
According to the IMF document, which was released on Tuesday, Macau's economy will also see substantial growth in 2022, of 43%.
Last year the region's economy, which is highly dependent on tourism from mainland China, suffered from a massive reduction in the number of visitors due to border restrictions imposed to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19, resulting in a huge drop in gambling revenues. Macau's casinos last year had revenues of just 60.4 billion patacas (€6.4 billion), down 79.3%.
The IMF forecasts appear to be in line with the recovery that is already being recorded in Macau's casino sector: in March 2021 it had its best monthly result since the start of the pandemic, accorrding to official data, with 8.306 billion patacas in revenue, up 50% on the same month last year.
Globally, the World Economic Outlook forecasts unemployment to remain low: 2.5% this year and 2.1% next, while inflation should be 2.5% this year and 2.1% next, having been averaged 2.9% in 2020.
The IMF has revised up its forecast for global economic growth to 6% in 2021, half a percentage point more than it was predicting back in January, citing strong growth in the US and China.
But in the report its chief economist, Gita Gopinath, warned that economic recoveries were already diverging "dangerously" between and within countries, due to differing paces of vaccination against Covid-19, more limited state support; it also said that countries that rely more on tourism are likely to perform worse.
For 2022, the IMF forecasts global growth of 4.4%, up two-tenths of a percentage point from its forecast of three months ago.
It now forecasts much faster growth for the US, the world's largest economy, which is now seen expanding 6.4% this year, or 1.3 percentage points more than the IMF forecast in January.
For China, the IMF expects growth of 8.4% this year, 0.3 of a point more than in January, noting that its effective coroanvirus containment measures, a powerful public investment response and liquidity support from the central bank has facilitated a "robust" recovery.
Other economies that are seen growing faster than previously expected this year include Japan, with 3.3% or 0.2 of a point more than previously forecast, Russia, with 3.8% or 0.8 of a point more, and South Africa, with 3.1% or 0.3 more.
Leading the growth parade among major countries is India, for which the IMF forecasts an expansion of 12.5% this year, a full percentage point more than in January.
