Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Entrepreneurs promote Portuguese culture in US with LisbonBlue brand

Los Angeles, Mar. 1, 2021 (Lusa) - Portuguese-American entrepreneurs Maria and Lisa Dias, a mother-daughter duo, created the LisbonBlue brand to promote Portuguese culture in the United States, drawing inspiration from the blue of the tiles scattered across the capital.

"These are products inspired by Portugal that we sell all over the world," designer Lisa Dias told Lusa. Although the brand's target is the consumer in the United States, the online shop has won customers from other countries, from the UK and Italy to France, Australia and even Portugal and Japan.

"We love the blue of Lisbon's tiles," said Maria Dias, who was born in Braga and emigrated to the United States in the 1960s.

She explained that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, between the confinement and the cancellation of Portuguese Festas, contributed to the greater interest of Portuguese-Americans in their roots and cultural heritage.

"I get a lot of questions from the younger generation, I think they are very interested and more and more involved," said Maria Dias, who is also a cookbook author and known on social media as "Tia Maria".

"I think with the pandemic, family is more important and people are closer. They want to learn about their heritage, their culture," she said, noting that among LisbonBlue's most successful products are aprons, decorative posters and mugs with phrases in Portuguese and English.

"Cozinha da Maria", "I'm Here for the Sardinhas", "But first, Vinho", "Welcome" or "Saudade" are some of the phrases available on products in the shop, and it is possible to request customised phrases and names.

"The number one attraction is that we personalise the products with any name and any language," said Lisa Dias, pointing out that personalised mugs for cousins and cousins are a hit with the younger generation.

"People crave this, especially with the pandemic. Now the focus is on the family," Maria Dias added.

"I think the younger generation is realising how important it is to preserve our culture," she said.

LisbonBlue has a portfolio of 700 different products and the entrepreneurial duo's aim is to reach 1,000 by the end of 2021, and they are considering adding new categories.

"We want to expand and have more products, possibly Portuguese ceramics," Lisa Dias said.

In addition to t-shirts, aprons, mugs, ornaments and decorative objects, the brand also designs earrings made from Portuguese cork with traditional patterns and icons, such as the Barcelos Rooster. The earrings and aprons are handmade.

Before creating this brand, Maria and Lisa Dias found success with a cooking blog, which spawned a YouTube channel and the Portuguese cookbooks "Taste Portugal", the most recent of which was published in 2020.
