Praia, Feb.25,2021 (Lusa) - Former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón, who coordinates the defence of Alex Saab, detained in Cabo Verde and considered a front for Nicolas Maduro, on Tuesday accused the United States of America (USA) of promising compensation for the extradition of the Colombian businessman.
Baltasar Garzón's reaction was made in a statement sent to Lusa by the defence of Alex Saab, after US Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken, this week expressed the desire of the US to strengthen its security partnership with Cabo Verde, considering that "obviously this act of solidarity and support is not accidental.
"Programmes for the National Guard, investment programmes for American companies and the praise for governance and human rights, is most likely related to the quid pro quo for granting extradition," said Garzón, international legal coordinator for the Alex Saab case.
The former Spanish judge fears for Cabo Verde's judicial independence and notes the change on the part of the United States with the new administration: "Also, it is the style of the Democratic party, different in every way from the previous one, which was characterised by threats and brute force. Now it is promises of governance, friendship, preparation and support for investment," he criticised.
The US on Tuesday expressed its willingness to strengthen its security partnership with Cabo Verde, in a phone call from US secretary of state Antony J. Blinken, to his Cape Verdean counterpart, Rui Figueiredo Soares.
"Secretary Blinken and foreign and Cabo Verde's defence minister Figueiredo discussed bilateral dialogue to advance common priorities, expand trade relations and strengthen the security partnership," said US State Department spokesman Ned Price.
Blinken expressed US "pride" in having "a friend" in Cabo Verde, a country "that is a model of democratic governance and human rights in Africa."
"He also expressed interest in working with the Cape Verdean government to bring investment opportunities to the attention of US companies," he added.
Alex Saab, 49, was arrested on 12 June by Interpol and the Cape Verdean authorities during a refuelling stop at the International Airport on the island of Sal, based on an international arrest warrant issued by the US, when he was returning from a trip to Iran on behalf of Venezuela as a "special envoy".
The Barlavento Court of Appeal on the island of São Vicente has ruled twice - the last time in January, both times on appeal by the defence - for the extradition of Alex Saab to the US.
The Venezuelan government is demanding Alex Saab's release, saying that he had diplomatic immunity at the time of his arrest in Sal, so Cabo Verde could not have allowed this process.
The Colombian businessman was placed under house arrest at the end of January because he had exceeded the legal deadline for preventive detention but under strong security measures.
In this process, the US, which is requesting the extradition of the Colombian, accuses Alex Saab of having laundered $350 million (€295 million) to pay for acts of corruption of the Venezuelan president through the US financial system.
In a written interview with Lusa from jail on 8 January, the Colombian said he is "innocent" of the US accusations, calling it "ridiculous" to be pointed out as a frontman for Nicolás Maduro.
"I can say categorically: yes, I am innocent," Alex Saab stated.
