Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Simplified, facilitated mobility with new EU visa agreement

Praia, Feb. 25,2021(Lusa) - Cabo Verde's government on Thursday said that the approval of the agreement to simplify visa rules allows it to improve its relations with the European Union and provides for simplified and facilitated mobility.

The new agreement reflects the commitment of the parties to promote people-to-people contacts and safe, predictable and coordinated mobility.

The Council of the European Union, currently under Portuguese presidency, this week approved the signing of an agreement to simplify visa rules with Cabo Verde, proposed by the European Commission last December.

The Council of the European Union announced on Twitter, that on Monday it adopted the decision to sign an agreement amending the visa facilitation agreement between the EU and Cabo Verde, to reduce the fees involved in issuing them, broadening the categories of citizens who can apply for multiple-entry visas and simplifying the documents to be presented.

The 27 gave the green light to the proposal presented on 10 December by the EU executive, which announced on that date it had adopted a proposal to the Council to simplify visa rules with Cabo Verde, which in 2014 became the first African country to conclude a visa facilitation agreement, alongside a readmission agreement, with the EU.

The new rules will reduce the visa fee, simplify the possibility of obtaining a multiple-entry visa with an increasingly longer period of validity, and simplify the list of supporting documents to be submitted along with the visa application for citizens of Cabo Verde.

The amending agreement will further facilitate the issuance of short-stay visas to Cape Verdeans (up to 90 days in any 180 days).

In October 2019, the Council of the EU authorised the opening of these negotiations with Cabo Verde, which were then concluded in July 2020.

The conclusion of this agreement is part of a wider Mobility Partnership between the EU and Cabo Verde, in place since 2008, and reflects the parties' commitment to promoting people-to-people contacts and mutual mobility in a secure environment.

Cabo Verde signed in 2014 a visa facilitation agreement with the European Union, in parallel with the readmission agreement in the framework of the Mobility Partnership with the European bloc.
