Lusa - Business News - Portugal: António Horta Osório replaces Luís Portela on Bial board of directors

Lisbon, Jan.22,2021 (Lusa) - António Horta Osório will be the new chairman of the board of Bial Pharmaceutical from April, after leaving the executive presidency of Lloyds Bank, replacing Luís Portela in office.

"Luís Portela's invitation to me is a great pride. Bial is one of the Portuguese companies that I most admire, not only for the mission it has embraced of contributing to improving people's health and quality of life but also for the success it has achieved in implementing its strategy," Osório told Lusa.

He replaces Luís Portela, Bial's majority shareholder and chairman for the last 42 years.

"In close collaboration with the CEO, António Portela, as well as the other members of the board of directors, I hope to actively contribute to a permanent improvement of the organisational model, to maximise the long-term value of the company and to reinforce the path of internationalisation that Bial has long successfully embarked upon," Osório said.

"I believe that my international experience in executive and non-executive roles can be useful to the company that is present in some markets that I know quite well", he said.

"The path designed by Luís Portela launched Bial in the world, making it a renowned international company and allowing it to now aspire to go even further," Osório said.

Asked by Lusa about his departure from Bial's board of directors, Portela said that it has been prepared for some years now.

"I have always said that I would not like to stay in office forever and I had already shared the intention of ceasing my professional activity before my 70th birthday, which will happen in a few months," Portela said.

"I have led the company for 42 years, 32 of which as CEO," he stressed, pointing out that Bial is now a solid project, an international innovation company at the service of the health of an ever-increasing number of people around the world.

He said that he considers it healthy that other people of great professional competence, such as António Horta Osório, are now taking responsibility for leading and developing it.

Asked about any short-term projects, Luis Portela said that he will now have more time to dedicate to the Bial Foundation, which he will continue to preside over, which is a patronage institution with the mission of encouraging the scientific study of the human being, both from the physical and spiritual points of view.

The foundation awards three prizes in the area of health sciences - the Bial Prize for Clinical Medicine, the Bial Award in Biomedicine and the Maria de Sousa Prize - and promotes financial support for scientific research projects involving over 1,500 researchers from 25 countries.

"It will be very rewarding to be able to devote more time to the Bial Foundation," he added.

In addition, "I will also have more time for my family and to dedicate myself to my areas of interest: reading, writing and the subjects I like to explore, namely psychophysiology, parapsychology and spirituality," Portela said.

In 1979, Portela, then 27 years old, bought the majority of the capital and assumed the presidency of the company founded in 1924 by his grandfather, leading its transformation into an international pharmaceutical company of innovation, with the global launch of the first Portuguese research medicines: an antiepileptic and an antiparkinsonian.

In 2011, he passed the executive presidency to his eldest son, António Portela, and became the chairman of the pharmaceutical company.

Since 2010, the administration has had its son Miguel, reinforcing the presence of the fourth generation of the Portela family in the management of Bial, the group said.

António Horta Osório, who will also be the future chairman of Credit Suisse from May this year, began his banking career at Citibank in 1987, followed by Goldman Sachs in New York and London.

In 1993 he was invited by Emilio Botín to Santander and created Banco Santander de Negócios Portugal, becoming executive vice-president of the Santander group in 1999.

In 2010 he took over the executive chairmanship of Lloyds, having accepted non-executive directorships at the Bank of England, and in some large economic groups such as Exor (holding company of the Agnelli family) and INPAR (holding company of the Lemann family), which he maintains.
