CNA - More than 3,500 COVID cases diagnosed in the last 14 days, according to the National Surveillance Report




CNA-Nicosia-A total of 3,711 COVID-19 cases were diagnosed between 6-19 January, according to the National Surveillance Report, published on Friday.

The figures up to January 19, show that a total of 29,250 COVID-19 cases were diagnosed and 177 people died due to COVID-19, bringing the case fatality risk to 0.6%.

The 14-day cumulative diagnosis rate is 417.9 per 100,000 population and the median age was 39 years; 51.5% were female, 48.4% male and for four cases (0.1%) sex is unknown at the moment.

According to the Report 1.6% (n = 58) cases were imported and 98.4% (n = 3,653) were locally-acquired.

Figures on January 21 show that 189 people were hospitalized and their median age is 71 years, 60.9% (n = 115) are males and 30.7% (n = 58) are from Nicosia district. Of those patients 38 are in intensive care units (ICU) and 34 are intubated. The median age of current ICU patients is 67 (IQR: 60-75) years and 25 (65.8%) are males. Twenty-four (63.2%) patients currently in ICU have pre-existing conditions.

The total number of cases in the Republic up to January 19 were 29,250.

As regards the cases diagnosed in the last 14 days (6-19 January) these included 563 infants, children and adolescents aged 0-19 years-old (15.2%), 2,399 adults aged 20-59 years (64.7%), 748 persons aged 60 years and older (20.2%), and for one case (0.03%) age is unknown at the moment.

The median age of all cases diagnosed in the last 14 days is 39 years (IQR: 25-56 years). The median age of adult cases (≥ 18 years) is 44 years (IQR: 31-59 years).

Among all cases diagnosed in the last 14 days, 1,346 (36.3%) were reported in Limassol district, 1,210 (32.6%) in Nicosia, 715 (19.3%) in Larnaka, 221 (6%) in Pafos, 122 (3.3%) in Ammochostos, and 97 (2.6%) were reported either in the British Bases or had a residence abroad, or information was not available.

In the last 14 days (06-19 Jan, 2021), 31.1% (n = 1,153) reported no symptoms at diagnosis and 68.9% (n = 2,558) reported at least one symptom while 1,022 cases (27.6%) reported at least one comorbidity.

The COVID-19 associated mortality is 19.9 per 100,000 population.
Deaths occurred in 118 men (66.7%) and 59 (33.3%) women; the median age of all COVID-19 associated deaths was 82 years (IQR: 74-87 years).

By district of residence, deceased cases were 60 (33.9%) from Nicosia, 56 (31.6%) from Limassol, 32 (18.1%) from Larnaka, 14 (7.9%) from Ammochostos, 12 (6.8%) from Pafos and three deaths (1.7%) occurred among cases reported either in the British bases or had a residence abroad, or information was not available.

The median time from date of sampling to death (due to COVID-19) was 12 days (IQR: 6-18 days). The figures show that among cases, 213 deaths (all causes) were reported in Cyprus until January 21st, 2021 (CFR: 0.7%).

The mortality (all-causes) for people with COVID-19 is 24 per 100,000 population.

Deaths occurred in 142 men (66.7%) and 71 (33.3%) women; the median age of all deaths was 82 years (IQR: 74-87 years). By district of residence, deceased cases were 70 (32.9%) from Limassol, 67 (31.5%) from Nicosia, 39 (18.3%) from Larnaka, 16 each (7.5%) from Ammochostos and Pafos, and five deaths (2.3%) occurred among cases reported either in the British bases or had a residence abroad, or information was not available.

The median time from date of sampling to death (all-causes) was 11 days (IQR: 6-17 days).

As regards the hospitalization and intensive care unit admissions, in total, 4.8% (n = 1,394) of people with COVID-19 received hospital care, as of January 21th. The median age of hospitalized patients was 66 years (IQR: 52-78 years). Hospitalized cases were mainly males (n = 811; 58.2%).

The median age of patients still hospitalized as of 21st of January, 2021 (n = 189) is 71 years (IQR: 61-77 years), 60.9% (n = 115) are males, and 30.7% (n = 58) are from Nicosia district. One-hundred-twenty-five cases (68.7%) still hospitalised have comorbidities.

Overall, 143 cases (10.3% of all hospitalized patients) have been admitted to ICU. The median age of patients ever admitted to ICU was 69 years (IQR: 62-76 years). ICU patients are mainly male (n = 99; 69.2%).
The overall median length of stay in ICU (for all ICU cases) was 11 days (IQR: 7-22 days).

According to figures up to January 21, 38 cases are still in ICU (including deaths / discharged on that day). The median age of current ICU patients is 67 (IQR: 60-75) years and 25 (65.8%) are males. Twenty-four (63.2%) patients currently in ICU have pre-existing conditions.

The number of cases currently in ICU is 4.3 per 100,000 population (as of January 21st, 2021, including deaths/discharged on that day).

A total of 128 ICU patients (89.5% of all ICU patients) have been intubated - currently there are 34 patients intubated in ICU (including deaths/discharged on that day).

Based on data up to January 21, 73.7% (n = 21,408) of COVID-19 cases have recovered/released from isolation5; of which 1,315 (6.1%) tested negative two consecutive times, and 20,093 (93.9%) have been released as per later guidelines.
