Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Air traffic 58% down in 2020, lowest since 1998

Lisbon, Jan.18,2021(Lusa)-Air traffic in Portugal during the past year fell back to 1998 levels, with a total of 345,300 flights, down 58% from a maximum of 816,000 in 2019, NAV Portugal said on Monday.

"The NAV Portugal managed 345,300 flights in 2020, a year negatively marked by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic which was felt with particular force in civil aviation," the airspace manager revealed today, according to provisional figures for 2020, indicating that this represents "the worst record since 1998" when there were 357,000 flights.

In year-on-year terms, the figure for 2020 represents a 58% drop in air traffic, in line with that observed throughout the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) network, whose traffic fell by 55% over the past year.

According to NAV, since 1998 the total number of movements "grew constantly until the peak recorded in 2019" of 816,000 flights.

"It was a situation that caught everyone off guard. No one ever thought it possible for aviation to reach almost total immobility. Adapting the operation to the constraints of the pandemic and, at the same time, to the unavoidable demands of transporting medical equipment, emergency flights and hundreds of repatriation flights to several European countries, was one of the greatest challenges that NAV has ever faced", the president of the NAV, Manuel Teixeira Rolo said in a statement.

"Although even the most pessimistic forecasts have been decimated by the evolution of the pandemic scenario, with falls in the course of the year greater than initially predicted, we estimate that this year will see some stability," he added.

Data from the NAV, indicate that the effects of the pandemic on air traffic were immediate, with flights falling to -94% in April, -92% in May and -88% in June, compared to the same months in 2019.

Over the summer there was a slight improvement, reaching levels equivalent to -55% compared to the same period in 2019, "but the last months of the year were marked by a further deterioration, a trend that continues in these first days of 2021," the company explained.

"Eurocontrol estimates that total traffic in 2021 will remain well below the pre-pandemic figures, although it is expected that next summer will bring a faster recovery in total flights," NAV said.

NAV also predicts that the return to figures close to the total number of flights recorded in 2019 is not expected until 2024.

In this regard, NAV said it was giving priority to "preparing for the future", foreseeing the entry into operation of a new traffic management system.
