Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Duero/Douro cross-border group promotes caravanning in north east region

Lisbon, Aug. 12, 2020 (Lusa) - The European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) Duero/Douro aims to promote motor caravanning in the north-east Transmontano and Beira Interior regions of Portugal, next to the Spanish provinces of Zamora and Salamanca, it announced on Wednesday.
This initiative with more than €420,000 intends to be the largest European route of motor caravanning and will consist of 37 sites, on both sides of the border.
The new route is inserted in the rainy zone that covers the protected areas of the Montesinho Natural Park, Douro International Natural Park, Arribas del Duero Natural Park (Spain) and part of Serra da Estrela.
"Each new site can house up to six motor caravans and users will be able to supply their vehicles, dump debris and wastewater. Each site will have electricity and drinking water," explained Evaristo Neves, the territorial coordinator of AECT Duero/Douro.
In addition to these facilities, the sites will be equipped with changing rooms with showers and rest areas for caravan lovers to stay overnight.
According to Evaristo Neves, there are more and more people looking for this border area, coming from all over Europe.
For this reason, he said that there is a necessity to create conditions for users and protect the environment.
If a person wants to stay a few days to explore this area, the cross-border project foresees providing electric bicycles at the sites.
The municipalities on the Portuguese side that will be contemplated with the new caravaning sites are Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Torre de Moncorvo and Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
On the Spanish side, an identical application was also approved.
This tourist initiative is part of the project called "RaiaNorte" of the AECT Duero/Douro, consisting of 215 entities on both sides of the border, in a territory that extends from Vinhais (Bragança) to Sabugal (Guarda) on the Portuguese side. On the Spanish side are included localities from the provinces of Zamora and Salamanca.
This project has obtained funding of €251,000 through Tourism of Portugal.
