Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Uber online platform rolls out passenger transport service nationwide

Lisbon, July 14,2020(Lusa)- Uber, a US-based passenger transport online platform, is now authorised to roll out its services throughout Portugal, at a time when domestic tourism is gaining in importance in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"In the month [July] when Uber celebrates six years of operation in Portugal, the application will have coverage throughout the country," the company said in a statement.
According to Uber, its drivers and partners in transport in light passenger vehicles (TVDE) will have access to more economic opportunities in a year in which many residents of Portugal will be spending their holidays in the country.
In a reply sent to Lusa, Uber stated that its operation will now cover all municipalities.
"When we say the whole national territory, we mean all municipalities," it said. "Right now, Uber allows any TVDE driver to operate anywhere in the country."
The managing director of Uber's Portugal operations, Manuel Pina, is quoted in the statement as seeing the measure as "an economic opportunity" that means drivers can help local communities.
"At a time when we need flexibility and innovation to overcome the crisis, we want everyone to have access to our services, wherever they are," he said, while stressing that Uber will not be able to offer "the same speed in all locations".
According to Manuel Pina, service reliability in all regions will be increased gradually: "We want to put our technology at the service of the whole country, whether to offer safer and more accessible travel, to send parcels and goods of first necessity or to support the mobility of populations that normally have less access to essential services."
According to Uber, outside major urban centres, the application will allow the registration of new partners with both electric and non-electric vehicles, due to constraints in access to chargers. As already announced, as of 16 July, Uber will only accept new partners with electric vehicles in the country's largest cities.
"The rule applies to new vehicles in the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas, the districts of Braga and Faro in relation to the main UberX service, as well as Comfort," the statement says. "Partners will be able to continue to add non-electric vehicles in case of replacement of a vehicle already registered on the platform or for Uber Black or UberXL services."
The Uber platform has been downloaded more than three million times in Portugal.
