Lusa - Business News - Portugal: New device to open doors without hands 'will help reduce contagion'

Coimbra, July 14, 2020 (Lusa) - The Coimbra Higher Institute of Engineering (ISEC), in central Portugal, is developing what it describes as an "innovative device" to allow doors to be opened without the use of hands to avoid contagion by the new coronavirus that causes Covid-19, it announced on Tuesday.
"ISEC is developing an R&DT [Research and Technological Development] project that will allow the production of an innovative device to support the opening of doors that will decrease contagions associated with the new coronavirus," reads a note sent to Lusa by the body, which is part of the Coimbra Polytechnic Institute.
Said to be designed "primarily for hospitals and health centres", the new mechanism will make possible "the opening of doors without using the hands" but can of course also be installed in other places with large influxes of people, such as shopping centres, schools, day centres or care homes.
Called 'Covid - Doors Openers', the equipment, which is to be "produced in large scale for the domestic and international markets", by Shapetek - Tecnologias de Maquinação, a company based in Pombal, makes it possible "to activate door handles with parts of the body less susceptible to enter in contact with the face" than the hands.
This "innovative ... versatile product, developed by a consortium of which ISEC is a part, was "conceived to adapt to any type of handle" and to be "easy to install and low-maintenance" at "an affordable cost", the ISEC note stresses, adding that it "will be very useful in the fight against Covid-19".
The consortium, which is led by Shapetek, also includes the Coimbra School of Education, the Marinha Grande Technology Centre for the Moulds, Special Tools and Plastics Industry, and Sandredy, a company based in Figueira da Foz.
The ISEC is "very committed" to this project, which it says "will provide an innovative, universal device - that is, adaptable to all handles - and which allows doors to be opened without the need to use hands," according to Mário Velindro, its president. "In a phase in which the fight against covid-19 requires safe behaviour, this device will be a strong response to this pandemic."
The system involves a set of mechanical elements that are easy to assemble and intuitive to use, enabling the user to interact with the device in a way that avoids direct contact with the hands when opening the doors, according to the project coordinator, Luís Roseiro.
"The concept is innovative and associates a dynamic movement with comfort and ergonomics in its use," said Roseiro, who is also responsible for the ISEC Biomechanics Laboratory, where the project is being developed, in collaboration with the consortium partners. This device will respect all safety standards, focussing on design and mechanical robustness, ensuring that it will fit harmoniously in with its surroundings," while "the geometry of the mechanism will also allow safe use by citizens with mobility limitations."
