Lusa - Business News - Portugal: PM believes EU beginning to understand Covid-19 situation in Portugal

The Hague,July 14,2020(Lusa)–The Prime Minister, António Costa, has said that he is convinced that EU countries are "finally" beginning to realise that the large increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Portugal is very localised, and he assumes that it has also raised the awareness of his European counterparts.
"I think that it has finally begun to be understood in some government offices what the great disparity of the situation is in Portugal. We have a country where the situation is very low and then we have 19 parishes in greater Lisbon, out of a total of more than 3,000 in the country, where there are a very significant number of new cases", he said during a trip to The Hague, during which he also discussed the issue with his Dutch counterpart, Mark Rutte, as part of efforts to get this message across, which he said he believed was getting through.
António Costa pointed out that "Belgium, for example, understood this on Sunday and has already made a very clear differentiation from Lisbon in relation to the rest of the country; the Netherlands, which had put Porto together with Lisbon, has already withdrawn Porto", and he revealed that he had a telephone conversation with his Irish counterpart today (Monday), with the same concern to explain the situation of Covid-19 numbers and the necessary differentiation.
"I also tried to make him aware of this differentiation and that, in particular, areas that are traditional tourist destinations of the Irish, such as the Algarve and Madeira, are in a clearly different situation from these 19 parishes", he said.
According to António Costa, "this message is important because people see the overall figures by country and then often have no idea of the situation".
On Monday's decision by Belgian authorities to put Alentejo and Algarve under orange alert, António Costa dismissed the issue, considering that "a mere recommendation to go to the doctor" is not "a great disincentive" for people to travel to these regions, and noted that Belgium "took care to publish the names of the 19 parishes that are under red alert.
On the other hand, the Portuguese Prime Minister noted that, in the weeks of reference taken into account, "the Algarve and the Alentejo were hyperinflated by two absolutely atypical phenomena: the party of Odiáxere", which he said he hoped "wouldn't be repeated anywhere else in the Algarve, and the situation in the care home in Reguengos de Monsaraz", two situations that resulted in "an anomalous number of new cases that don't correspond to the pattern of the regions".
António Costa took the opportunity to stress the "individual responsibility of each one", underlining that "no-one can ignore the fact that every time there's a distraction, it has a price, and a very high price", for health, but also "for the economic health of an entire region", as was the case in Odiáxere, where a party was held that led to a major outbreak.
"Let's not repeat it and ensure that people have learned their lesson, because the whole of the Algarve and the whole country are paying a very high price for that little party. So, jokes like this can't go on, and I think that all the people have understood too, and I hope they'll behave differently", he concluded.
