Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Galicia beerhouse in Porto closed after being declared insolvent

Porto,July 8,2020(Lusa)-The Galicia beerhouse, in Porto, has closed after the workers failed to reach an agreement with the insolvency administrator in a meeting held on Monday, the Northern Hotel Union said.

The Commercial Court of Vila Nova de Gaia declared on 4 June the insolvency of the Sociedade Atividades Hoteleiras Galicia Portuense, owner of Cervejaria Galicia, following the request made by Sociedade Real Sabor, of Vila Nova de Gaia, in which it claims €11,951, with 30 days for claims.

According to the union, the insolvency administrator met on Monday with the workers, following which he decided to close the establishment because there were no conditions to keep it open.

The decision comes at a time when the union is waiting for a response from the government to the request for a meeting addressed shortly after the ruling was made known, since the state is the biggest creditor of the company that owns the beerhouse, with debts accumulated in November 2019, to the tax and social security authorities, of around €2 million.

"The union's management regrets the closure of Galicia because the restaurant is viable, even in times of pandemic it held up and the wages were always paid," said the union's communication.

And it added that the workers imposed its reopening on 11 November 2019, kept the establishment open for these eight months, received the salaries and other compensation in arrears for a total of 10 months.

The hope of the 30 or so workers of the brewery now lies in the outcome of the creditors' meeting, scheduled for 4 August and in the event of the appearance of an investor who guarantees the jobs and schedules the payment of the debts.

Founded on 29 July 1972, in early November 2019, the then 33 workers of the historic beerhouse in Porto were surprised with an attempt by the company's manager to coercive closure of the premises, eventually organizing itself and, since then, ensuring the daily management of the space.

Before the closure was attempted, the company that owns Cervejaria Galiza, to resolve the financial difficulties, had recourse to a PER (Special Process of Revitalisation), accepted by the Commercial Court of Vila Nova de Gaia.

With debts to the tax and social security authorities of around €2 million, the company that owned the space was still in arrears with the payment of the 2018 Christmas subsidy, the second instalment of that month's salary.

The attempt to find a solution then passed to the Ministry of Labour, and the company and representatives of the workers and the Union of Hotel Industry of the North met several times since December in the Directorate-General of Employment and Labour Relations (DGERT) in Porto.

During these meetings, the company representatives promised to go ahead with a controlled insolvency process and recovery of the company, which safeguarded the jobs but never materialised.
