Lusa - Business News - Angola: UNICEF provides nutritional supplements for 10,000 children

Luanda, June 29, 2020 (Lusa)-The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has made available more than 9,600 boxes of nutritional supplements, which will benefit more than 10,000 Angolan children under five from four provinces.

A UNICEF press release, which Lusa saw on Monday, pointed out that the nutritional supplements will strengthen provincial programmes to combat malnutrition, the activities developed by local governments in this period of response to Covid-19, as well as support nutritional response interventions resulting from periods of cyclical drought in the provinces of Cuando Cubango, Cunene, Huila and Namibe, in the south of the country.

"UNICEF has supported the government of Angola, particularly the provincial governments in the south of the country, in developing emergency response packages that focus primarily on health and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, child protection, behavioural change and community involvement," the note highlights.

The United Nations highlights that these activities are based on a broader strategy to link emergency response with a local social development agenda.

With the assistance of UNICEF and partners, the UN organisation said more than 300 health technicians were trained in the first half of this year to provide screening and treatment services for acute malnutrition and to provide counselling on child feeding practices and micronutrient supplementation for parents and caregivers of young children.

Last year, funds from the United Nations Emergency Center (CERF), support from UNICEF and non-governmental organisations World Vision, Action for Rural Development (ADRA) and People In Need enabled some 232,000 children under five to be screened for malnutrition through the intervention of more than 1,000 community workers and trained health technicians in the provinces of Cunene, Huila, Bié and Namibe.

Of the total number of children diagnosed, more than 23,000 were treated for moderate acute malnutrition and about 7,800 were treated for severe acute malnutrition in 28 special nutrition units and 218 health units, with outpatient treatment programs equipped with nutritional supplies and diagnostic materials.

This year, activities in southern Angola have been funded by CERF, the Banco de Fomento de Angola, and the Government of Japan, whose support, in addition to the purchase of nutritional supplements, includes ensuring that some 16,000 children under five have access to prevention and screening for acute malnutrition and some 12,000 other school-age children benefit from deworming and micronutrient supplementation.

"The issue of malnutrition has been a major concern for UNICEF and its partners, even before the pandemic, but with the occurrence of this emergency more families may have greater difficulty in ensuring the proper nutrition of their children, so our efforts are going to support the authorities to ensure that there is continuity of these and other services so that no child is left behind and their situation worsens," said Jean François Basse, acting UNICEF representative in Angola, quoted in the document.

UNICEF pointed out that Angola is prone to cyclical droughts, which mainly affect the south of the country, and it is estimated that more than 56,000 families will be in a situation of food insecurity in 2020, due to the drought in 2019.

According to the latest nutritional survey conducted in the provinces of Huila and Cunene, the prevalence of acute malnutrition in children under five is 13.6% in Huila and 12.9% in Cunene, with an estimated 3% of these children in Huila and 1.7% in Cunene at risk of life due to severe acute malnutrition.

Rainfall has been scarce and irregular in southern Angola and the last three years have seen the highest temperatures since 1975, the statement stressed.
