Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Almost 80% of accommodation sees bookings cancelled

Lisbon, May 29, 2020 (Lusa) - Over 78% of tourist accommodation in Portugal saw bookings cancelled between March and August, with the most significant cancellations in Madeira and the Azores due to the "more restrictive mobility measures" in force, INE reported today.

According to a questionnaire conducted in May by the Statistics Portugal (INE), which obtained responses from around 5,000 establishments on the outlook for tourist activity until August, 78.4% (slightly below the 79.2% in April) of respondents (representing 90.4% of their supply capacity) reported that the Covid-19 pandemic had led to the cancellation of bookings.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira was the one with the highest number of establishments with bookings cancelled (90.4% of the establishments and 98.3% of the capacity offered), followed by the Azores (86.7% and 96.5%, respectively), the Lisbon Metropolitan Area of(84.3% and 93.6%, in the same order) and the Algarve (81.7% and 91.2%, respectively).

According to INE, "the more restrictive measures to people's mobility may have influenced the higher rate of cancellations that occurred in the autonomous regions".

In the hotel segment, 92.0% of the total establishments (94.3% of the capacity) reported cancellations due to the pandemic, and this percentage rose to 74.2% of short-term let establishments (78.4% of the capacity offered) and 68.8% of the total (74.1% of the capacity) in rural and residential tourism.

The INE noted that "the proportion of establishments reporting partial or total cancellations of bookings decreases in the months when traditionally requests for tourist accommodation services are most intense".

Still, according to this information gathered in May, about 74.4% reported cancellations for June, 63.6% for July and 57.5% for August.

When questioned about the main markets with booking cancellations (each establishment could identify up to three markets), the national market was the most mentioned, identified by 60.8% of tourist accommodation establishments.

The Spanish market was the second most referred to (by 49.4% of the establishments), followed by the French (31.9% of the establishments), German (27.1% of the establishments) and British (24.1% of the establishments).

Analysing the markets identified as one of the three with the highest number of cancellations in each region, it can be seen that, in the north, the national market was identified by 66.2% of the outlets, followed by the Spanish market, referred to by 61.6% of the outlets.

In the centre, the national market was mentioned by 84.2% of the establishments, followed by the Spanish market (52.5% of the establishments), while in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area the Spanish market was mentioned by 59.0% of the establishments, in Alentejo the national market was identified by 81.3% of the establishments and in Algarve 65.0% of the establishments mentioned the British market.

In the Autonomous Regions, the national market was identified by 83.9% of the outlets in the Azores, followed by the German market (54.0% of the outlets), while in Madeira it was identified by 72.9% of the outlets, followed by the French market (58.7% of the outlets) and the British market (49.0% of the outlets).

INE reports that, in hotels, the national market was mentioned as one of the three markets with the highest number of cancellations by 66.5% of the establishments, followed by the Spanish market (58.1%).

In local accommodation establishments, the Spanish market was identified by 49.8% of establishments, followed by the national market (48.2%), and in rural tourism and housing establishments, the national market was mentioned by 74.5% of establishments.

Worldwide, according to an AFP news agency balance sheet, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused more than 357,000 deaths and infected more than 5.7 million people in 196 countries and territories.

Portugal has had at least 1,369 deaths associated with Covid-19 in 31,596 confirmed cases of infection, according to the daily bulletin of the health authority (DGS) released on Thursday.
