Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: Covid-19 stops teaching, boosts emigation

Bissau, May 29,2020 (Lusa) - Many children in Guinea-Bissau may not return to school and migration is expected to increase due to the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, according to a report released by the UN Development Programme.

"Some children may not return to school and girls are disproportionately at risk of dropping out. Many families see their economic activity interrupted and the most vulnerable resort to child labour or marry their daughters to better deal with the crisis," said the report, which analyses the socio-economic impact of Covid-19 in Guinea-Bissau.

With one of the lowest human development rates in the world, most pupils in Guinea-Bissau do not finish their fourth year of school and almost half of the children have never been to school.

As part of the fight against and prevention of Covid-19, the authorities have closed schools indefinitely.

"The lack of technological devices and the high cost of access to the Internet make homeschooling a non-starter for the general population," the report said.

The document pointed out that the closure of schools and the lack of employment prospects due to the outbreak of Covid-19 may lead to the radicalisation of young people and migration.

The report stresses that it is important to invest in infrastructure and education to create jobs for young people and to give them a voice and financial means to take control of their economic success.

The report pointed out that the economic downturn and lack of quality services will lead more citizens to seek a better future in other countries.

Guinea-Bissau has had almost 1,200 cases of Covid-19 infection and eight deaths.

In Africa, there are 3,790 confirmed deaths in more than 129,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the pandemic in that continent.

Worldwide, according to an assessment by the AFP news agency, the Covid-19 pandemic has claimed more than 357,000 lives and infected more than 5.7 million people in 196 countries and territories.
