Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government accused of ignoring olive oil factory pollution in Alentejo

Ferreira do Alentejo,Beja,May 25,2020(Lusa)-An association has accused the government of "doing nothing" to solve the environmental and public health problem related to olive oil processing factories in the Alentejo and has demanded that it comply with the measures recommended by parliament.
In a statement sent on Monday to the Lusa agency, the Environmental Association of Friends of Fortes, a village in the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo, district of Beja, located near and affected by the work of AZPO - Azeites de Portugal, which processes olive residue, states that "nothing" has been done by the government of the measures recommended by parliament. Therefore, the association demands the "compliance" of the measures to solve the problem, recommended to the Government in a resolution approved by the Parliament in July and published in the Official Gazette in August 2018.
The association also demands "air quality testing" in Fortes "now and not when the AZPO plant is down" and permanent monitoring measures to safeguard public health.
In the statement, the association also demands to be able to participate in meetings on the problem of Fortes promoted by the Municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo and regrets that "it was not considered to participate" in a meeting held recently between the municipality and the Minister of Agriculture on the subject.
Following a communication from the association, four left bloc (BE) deputies questioned the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, and the Minister of Environment and Climate Action, João Matos Fernandes, about the environmental and public health problem related to olive oil processing that "persists in Fortes".
Through questions, BE wants to know if the Government confirms the persistence of the problem related to olive residue transformation in Fortes and of the measures recommended by parliament which have already been carried out and which are still to be carried out.
BE also wants to know what measures the Government plans to take to 'prevent' AZPO from 'continuing to cause' public health and environmental problems to the population of Fortes.
Through the question addressed to João Matos Fernandes, the BE also wants to know if the authorities have been carrying out inspections of the AZPO and monitoring the quality of the air, water and soil in the area surrounding the plant and, if so, when they have been carried out or at what intervals and what are the conclusions and consequences.
BE also wants to know what conditions were imposed for the resumption of AZPO's operations in November 2018 after having been suspended in June of that year by order of the IAPMEI - Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation and due to serious infractions and whether the authorities supervised the compliance with the conditions and the correct operation of the plant.
