Lusa - Business News - East Timor: Country exports $100M worth of gas, oil in first four months

Dili,May 25,2020(Lusa)–East Timor exported, in the first four months of the year, about $100 million (about €92 million) of oil and gas, with a significant drop in April, the Ministry of Finance said on Monday.
In the same period, and according to data from the first four months of the year now released by the Directorate-General of Statistics, the country exported around 273,000 kilograms of coffee worth $543,000 (€498,000).
On the other hand, the same data showed that between January and April the country imported goods worth $212 million (around €195 million), also with a significant drop in April.
These figures confirm the slowdown in the economy in April, when the country was under a state of emergency due to Covid-19, with oil and gas exports falling significantly from $28 million in March to only $2.4 million in April.
Imports also fell by half, from $71 million in March to $35.5 million last month.
Due to the state of emergency and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in East Timor, the country’s economy has been experiencing significant impacts, with forecasts that the economic contraction could reach double figures this year.
The data now released showed that March recorded the highest value of imports, with January recording the highest value of exports.
