Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Families lose €3.9B due to pandemic - consumer association

Lisbon,May 22,2020(Lusa)-Each Portuguese family has lost, on average, €944 since the beginning of the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, with a total loss of €3.9 billion, according to a Deco - Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection report released on Friday.

"At the same time that the containment measures stopped the contagion by Covid-19, many Portuguese families were entering a financial crisis. Since the beginning of the pandemic in our country last March, until mid-May, the loss of income was general in 70% of households," said Deco.

According to the data provided by the association, considering all Portuguese families, each one has lost, on average, €944, a value that multiplied by the number of households (close to 4.2 million) translates into a loss of €3.9 billion, almost three times the amount in mid-March (€1.4 billion).

At the heart of the financial cut is the loss or reduction in professional income which, between mid-March and May, rose from €581 to €1,126.

On the other hand, the financial damages registered in the period are still justified by the cancellation of trips, cultural and sports events, losses in real estate rents and investments in financial products.

Of the total number of respondents, 9% had difficulty in paying the house loan, in May, 12% rent, 13% telecommunications, 12% gas, electricity and water and 11% food.

"Savings, therefore, are being greatly affected. In one-third of cases, savings have already been used to meet daily expenses and another third of families foresee the need to do so. Given the adverse circumstances, one in four families has been forced to ask for financial assistance," the document said.

According to Deco, since the beginning of the crisis, 65% of the Portuguese have remained professionally active and 42% of these continue to receive the same salary, while 23% have seen their income cut.

Already 22% of families face "darker horizons" with some member temporarily out of work, for example, due to the layoff regime (reduction of working hours or suspension of contracts) or unemployment, which reached 13% of respondents.

The self-employed were the most affected, with the majority continuing to work but with a loss of income.

During the next 12 months, 26% of the respondents forecast a "probable" loss of employment and 30% a wage cut with no reduction in working hours, while 23% also forecast an increase in working hours with the same pay.

Also, 31% of respondents thought it was "probable" that they would lose or reduce employee benefits, such as meal allowances or bonuses, and 22% said it was "very probable or certain".

For this report, Deco sent, between 14 and 15 May, an online questionnaire to a representative sample of the Portuguese population, aged between 18 and 74.

In total, 1,002 answers were obtained.

Portugal has had 1,277 deaths associated with Covid-19 in 29,912 confirmed cases of infection, according to the latest daily bulletin of the health authorities (DGS) on the pandemic.

Portugal entered on 3 May in a state od public calamity due to the pandemic, after three consecutive periods in a state of emergency since 19 March.

This new phase of the fight against Covid-19 provides for compulsory confinement for sick people and those under active surveillance, the general duty to stay at home and the compulsory use of masks or visors on public transport, public services, schools and shops.

The government approved new measures that came into force on Monday, including the resumption of visits to users of old people's homes, the reopening of crèches, face-to-face classes for the 11th and 12th years and the reopening of some street shops, cafés, restaurants, museums, monuments and palaces.

The return of the community religious ceremonies is planned for 30 May and the opening of the bathing season on 6 June.
