Lusa - Business News - Portugal: A thousand Brazilian tourists waiting to be repatriated - embassy

Lisbon, Mar.31,2020 (Lusa)-The Brazilian embassy in Lisbon said on Tuesday that 1,000 Brazilians who were on pleasure or business trips, most of them passengers on Spain's Iberia airline, are still trapped in Portugal because of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus.

"Many of these 1,000 people who had travelled to Europe for pleasure or business trips, about 600 were European airline passengers and of this 90% were from Iberia. The rest had tickets from other airlines from places such as Cape Verde or Morocco," Luciano Andrade, Minister Counselor of the Brazilian Embassy in Lisbon, told Lusa.

"It has not been easy to get accommodation [for these thousand people] to get seats on flights by other airlines, not least because there are few of them and they are full" and "the places they have are in places with a higher cost", he added.

For now, "there have still been places in shelters, hostels and hostels" for these people who "have stayed" here, said the diplomat, but it is not known until when, and some of these Brazilian citizens are in a vulnerable situation, also because the resources are beginning to be scarce, despite the support that has been given by the embassy, he said.

In this context of pandemic and with travel alternatives becoming scarce, the diplomat admitted that the embassy has been in contact with the Brazilian authorities in order to find a solution as soon as possible for these citizens who want to return to the country as soon as possible, acknowledging that the possibility of repatriation is on the table, although only as a hypothesis.

The diplomat had already recalled, in statements prior to the Lusa, that before the Covid-19 pandemic there were a total of 60 flights a week from Lisbon to various destinations in Brazil.

But in recent weeks, there have been no more than five commercial flights.

This has created difficulties for many Brazilians who were in the country for tourism when measures to prevent and combat the spread of the new coronavirus began to be taken, both in Portugal and in other European states, notably Spain, which for many was the destination chosen for travel to Europe, and then Brazil.

"But the attitude of some airlines was not the best either", Luciano Mazza de Andrade said at the time.

The Brazilian embassy in Lisbon created a team of "25 people" to respond to the thousands of Brazilian tourists who were in Portugal, and "in contact with Portuguese and Brazilian authorities, as well as with operators and airlines, has managed to make the repatriation, despite the difficulties", he said.

The embassy services, however, only provide support, they do not offer financial assistance for repatriation.

"The costs of travel are borne by the operators and airlines" because they were who people bought the ticket from, he also said at the time.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, has infected more than 791,000 people around the world, of whom more than 38,000 have died.

At least 163,000 are considered cured.

After the outbreak in China in December, it spread around the world, which led the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic situation.

Europe, with almost 439,000 infected and more than 27,500 dead, has the highest number of cases today, and Italy is the country with the most deaths in the world, with 11,591 deaths out of 101,739 confirmed cases by Monday.

Spain is the second country with the highest number of deaths, registering 8,189, out of 94,417 confirmed cases until today, while the United States of America has the highest number of infections (164,610).
