Luanda, Feb. 20,2020 (Lusa)–Angolan journalist José Kiabolo on Thursday filed a criminal complaint against police officers for the alleged attacks he suffered on Wednesday when he was covering a protest in Luanda against the inauguration of the new president of the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
"I believe in justice, which is why I filed this complaint with the 4th police station, here in Luanda, because I was brutally assaulted. I still have the marks of police aggression," the journalist from Palanca TV told Lusa on Thursday.
José Kiabolo, who, together with a fellow image reporter, say they were assaulted while interviewing demonstrators in the areas adjacent to the Angolan parliament, believes in a favourable outcome to the case, stating that the officers' attitude is condemnable.
The professional of Angolan Palanca TV, still with visible abrasions on his right arm, legs and back said that the assaults were led by more than five police officers.
"It is sad to remember the aggressions we were subjected to, but it is the truth, that is why we condemn and disapprove of this posture," he said.
Kiabolo said that the situation is already in the domain of the Angolan Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), namely the Laboratory of Central Criminalistics in Luanda where it was subjected to forensic examination on Thursday.
Several demonstrators, mostly affiliated to the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the largest opposition party, who contested the inauguration of Judge Manuel Pereira da Silva "Manico", reported scenes of arrests under police charge.
The inauguration of judge "Manico" took place on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Angolan parliament and was only ratified with 111 votes from MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) members, since the opposition left the plenary, withdrawing before the inauguration.
Alleged irregularities, illegalities and unconstitutionalities are pointed out in the election contest for the new president of the CNE, which led to protests inside and outside the headquarters of the Angolan parliament.
