Lusa - Business News - Equatorial Guinea: Country on track to attract foreign investment - Economist

London,Feb.20,2020(Lusa)-The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Thursday said that Equatorial Guinea should be able to attract a lot of foreign investment to the oil and gas sector this year, which was called the 'Year of Investment', following the 'Year of Energy'.
"The Year of Investment 2020 in Equatorial Guinea could gain momentum following the success of the Year of Energy in 2019 and successfully attract much-needed foreign direct investment," experts from the analysis unit of British magazine The Economist said.
In a comment sent to investors, and to which Lusa had access, the EIU recalled the interest shown by major global oil companies such as France's Trident, North America's Marathon Oil and several from Russia, and stressed that this shows that the strategy followed by Teodoro Obiang's government is right.
However, they added, the real challenge for the government will be to succeed in implementing the plan that intends to place the country as a regional gas platform, by processing the gas from its Alen and Aseng wells, to the east of the island of Bioko, using them to boost the petrochemical complex of Punta Europe and, more importantly, connecting Punta Europe with the wells on the coast of Nigeria and Cameroon.
For the EIU, the campaign launched last year by the government of Equatorial Guinea to stand out on the international scene in the area of oil and gas, raising investments, is working and will continue this year, with several initiatives, such as the African Oil Investment Exhibition and Forum, on 1 and 2 April, the Oil & Gas Meeting Day, on 1 and 2 June, and the African Economic Forum, on 24 and 25 November.
"The auction at the end of last year, which resulted in 27 agreements signed in January, revealed a strong demand for offshore assets and indicates that Malabo's strategy to reverse the decline in oil revenues is the right one," the analysts said.
