Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Country leads among PALOP deportees from US in 2019

Praia, Feb. 20,2020 (Lusa) - The US authorities deported about a hundred citizens from Portuguese-language African countries (PALOP) in 2019, about a dozen fewer than in the previous year, but half of the total were Cape Verdeans, according to official figures.
According to the deportation report for the fiscal year 2019 (1 October 2018 to 30 September 2019) of the US federal agency for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), consulted on Thursday by Lusa, the number of Cape Verdeans deported, for various reasons, but mostly illegal immigration, dropped to 50, compared to 68 in 2018.
The largest Cape Verdean community outside the archipelago, estimated at 250,000 people, resides in the United States, mainly in the state of Massachusetts.
In an interview with Lusa this month in Washington, Cabo Verde's outgoing ambassador to the US, Carlos Veiga, explained that deportations were a problem he encountered in relations between the two countries when he took office in 2016.
At the time, he recalled, Cabo Verde was on the list of non-cooperative countries in terms of deportation.
"In other words, the Cape Verdean government at the time, the previous one, had had a policy of not giving travel documents to the deportees and, therefore, Cabo Verde was accumulating situations without solution and ended up on the list of non-cooperative countries, which has consequences for political dialogue, consequences for cooperation. American cooperation agencies are instructed not to deal with the country and so on," the former Cape Verdean prime minister said.
According to Carlos Veiga, the problem then became diplomatic and was only overcome with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, causing Cabo Verde to leave the list of non-cooperative countries.
"We managed, in negotiations with the American authorities, to establish a regulatory framework that allows for transparency, predictability and that gives Cabo Verde the possibility to control and verify the nationality of the people who are deported," he added.
According to the 2019 report by the ICE, after Cabo Verde, among the PALOPs, Angola was the country with the most deportations, which increased from 32 in 2018 to 40 last year.
The total number of Guinea-Bissau citizens deported by police fell from five to four and Equatorial Guinea remained unchanged with five cases from 2018 to 2019.
After no deportations in 2018, three Mozambicans were deported last year, while Sao Tome and Principe again had no cases in 2019.
In total, the US deported a total of 267,258 citizens of various nationalities in the fiscal year 2019, up from 256,085 in the previous period. Brazil saw the number of deportees increase from 1,691 to 1,770, as did Portugal, which rose from 96 in 2018 to 101 in 2019, while East-Timor again had no cases.
