Lusa - Business News - Equatorial Guinea: Better governance central to programme - IMF

Washington, Dec. 12, 2019 (Lusa) - An International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesperson said on Thursday that the fight against corruption and improvements in governance will be a central element in the financial assistance programme in preparation for Equatorial Guinea.
"The Government of Equatorial Guinea has committed to implementing a national strategy to fight corruption and improve governance, and this will be a central element of any programme that goes ahead," he said, answering a question about the IMF's reaction to criticism from various groups that are asking the Fund to reject Malabo's request for financial assistance.
"We are required to work with any of our 189 member states and we try to work with them regardless of their difficult circumstances," he said.
"The IMF pays great attention to issues of governance and corruption, as we see in various parts of our programmes, marked by compliance with laws on international transparency, combating money laundering and financing of terrorist, among others," he said.
Equatorial Guinea's secretary of state for finance told Lusa earlier this month that the IMF should approve a financial aid package worth around US$600 million (€541 million) in December.
"As part of the financial programme to support the economies of Central Africa, the IMF will strengthen and support state revenues, and as part of that programme to support finance and public spending the IMF will provide a loan of around US$600 million," said Rafael Tung Nsue Bilogo, who is also the financial advisor to the president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang, who has been in power for 40 years.
Rafael Bilogo's statements came after the finance minister said he expected support from the IMF of around US$700 million [€631 million] while the IMF spokesman said at a press conference that the value of the programme should fall below US$300 million [€270 million].
Lusa asked the IMF spokesman again today about these different figures, but we have not received an answer.
Equatorial Guinea, a country of about one million people, has been ruled since August 1979 by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who holds the record for longevity in power in Africa.
The government of Equatorial Guinea is accused by various civil society organisations of constant human rights violations and persecution of opposition politicians.
Teodoro Obiang and his family - including his son Teodorin Obiang - have faced or are still facing investigations into corruption, embezzlement and money laundering in France and elsewhere.
This African country has been part of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) since 2014.
