Lusa - Business News - Macau: Government sets up cyber-security commission
Macau, China, Nov. 20, 2019 (Lusa) - The government of Macau on Wednesday presented an administrative regulation for the establishment of a cyber-security committee to respond to alert and emergency situations. Chaired by the Chief Executive, this body will be "responsible for defining the general direction, objectives and strategies in the area of cyber-security, monitoring and assessing the development and operation of cyber-security activities by operators of critical infrastructure". In just over a year and a half, the territory has decided to invest in enhanced video surveillance, the Cyber Security Act (to protect critical infrastructure operators and ensure public safety and order), the Chinese Flag, Emblem and Anthem Act (which provides for up to three years in prison for those who publicly and intentionally outrage the symbols and representations of the country) and the Basic Civil Protection Act, in which the crime of false social alarm can also result in three years of imprisonment. This administrative regulation announced today comes into force on 22 December, the same day as another bill that provides for punishing the use of computer devices to simulate mobile telecommunications issuers with up to three years imprisonment, or a fine, in a review of the current law. According to the authorities, the amendment is due to the "need to keep up with the times" and "adjust the current regime" to the Cyber-Security Act in force. The law also provides that the criminal investigation services may, upon judicial authorisation, use copies of computer data stored on servers outside Macau as evidence in criminal proceedings, "provided that such data is legitimately accessible or obtainable from the computer system located" in the Macau Special Administrative Region.
