Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Installation starts on Europe's first floating wind farm

Viana do Castelo, Portugal, Oct. 21, 2019 (Lusa)- The first floating platform of the Windfloat Atlantic project, the first floating wind farm in continental Europe, is being carried out to the high seas, where it will be installed, 20 kilometres from Viana do Castelo, the Windplus consortium said today.
Windfloat Atlantic (WFA) is a project for an offshore wind power plant in Viana do Castelo that is estimated to cost €125 million. It is coordinated by EDP, through EDP Renováveis, and includes the technological partner Principle Power, Repsol, venture capital Portugal Ventures and metallurgical company A. Silva Matos.
In a statement, sent to the press today, EDP said that "the structure, which left the port of Ferrol, in Galicia, Spain, towards Viana do Castelo, has the largest offshore wind turbine in the world based on a floating platform", and will be the first of "three wind towers" to be installed 20 kilometres from the coast, in an area where the water is 100 metres deep.
"When they are ready to enter the operational phase, the three floating structures will be 30 metres high and will be 50 metres apart", the company specifies.
According to EDP, "two of the platforms were manufactured in the port of Setúbal, in Portugal, and the third in the ports of Avilés and Ferrol, in Spain".
"Windfloat Atlantic includes state-of-the-art technology that minimises environmental impact and allows the production of offshore wind energy in deep waters, as is the case of the Portuguese coast", the company said.
According to the note, "in the coming months, the other two platforms will also be transported to the final location, to complete the wind farm that will have an installed capacity of 25 megawatts (MW), capable of producing enough electricity to supply about 60,000 homes.
WindFloat Atlantic uses "state-of-the-art" technology, provided by Principle Power, which will allow the installation of floating platforms in deep waters, previously inaccessible, which have abundant wind resources.
The project is supported by public and private entities and is financed by the European Commission, the Portuguese government and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
According to EDP, this project "will accelerate the commercial implementation of innovative WindFloat technology, which takes advantage of the abundance of wind resources in deep waters, hitherto inaccessible, constituting an important milestone for the sector, as it is the first floating semi-submersible wind farm in the world".
The three wind turbines, based on floating structures, will be "fastened only by chains to the seabed".
"This technology has broad benefits that increase its accessibility and improve its cost-effectiveness, including the possibility of assembling them on land, in a dry dock, without the need for specialised trailers," he adds.
According to the consortium responsible for the floating wind farm, the project also has the benefit of not relying on the complex operations that are necessary to install traditional structures fixed to the seabed, as in traditional offshore wind farms.
"The transport of the first of the three structures is an important milestone in this project, as it managed to avoid the need to have a tugboat built specifically for this project. This benefit, in addition to the simple anchoring process, makes it possible to replicate this initiative in other geographical areas and facilitates the commissioning phase of a similar project, regardless of geographical boundaries", the consortium said.
