ATA - Government project to support biodiversity, fishing sector in Ohrid Lake

TIRANA, Oct 8 /ATA/ – An Albanian government project will address and provide direct support for the biodiversity and fishing sector in Lake Ohrid, the deepest lake in the Balkans and under UNESCO protection due to its rich and diverse natural and historic value.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Roland Kristo said that Lake Ohrid is home to a large number of species of aquatic animals, and the particularly well known speckled trout. The government’s project is designed to repopulate the lake’s waters in large numbers of speckled trout, in a bid to preserve the lake’s biodiversity. The process is set to kick off in January and complete by end of next October.
Most recently, more than 1.5 million speckled trout seedlings were thrown into water in order to increase population of this rare fish species. Kristo noted that the process will also help efforts to preserve the lake’s biodiversity.
According to him, the speckled trout is threatened by illegal overfishing, pollution and growth of other endemic species along the lake.
