Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Leixões handles 155 million tonnes of liquid bulk since 2001

Matosinhos, Portugal, Oct. 8, 2019 (Lusa) – Leixões Oil Terminal in Matosinhos, in Porto, which is celebrating 50 years of activity, has handled 155 million tonnes of bulk liquid hydrocarbon since 2001, the Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo Ports Administration (APDL) said on Tuesday.
Taking stock of the activity between 2001 and 2019, the APDL said in a statement that this terminal, which includes a single buoy mooring located 3.3km off Leça da Palmeira, handled 155 million tonnes of liquid bulks, with the berthing of 9,247 tankers.
The Leixões Oil Terminal, which operates in close cooperation with the Oceânico Terminal - the emblematic single buoy mooring - is responsible for loading and unloading 7.5 million tonnes of liquid bulks a year on average, including the supply of raw materials to the Matosinhos refinery and the products it ships out by sea, he said.
The terminal was built on the submerged breakwater, 700m long and 15m above sea level, also serving as protection at the entrance to the Port of Leixões, in the district of Porto.
Linked to the refinery complex and storage parks by about twenty oil and gas pipelines, this serves as an entry point for all the products used by the Matosinhos Refinery, as well as by Cepsa's facilities.
The Leixões Oil Terminal marks 50 years since its inauguration with the arrival of the oil tanker "Larouco" on 8 October 1969.
To mark this milestone, APDL, together with Galp Energia, will promote during this October the exhibition "A Sea that unites us: 50 Years of the inauguration of the Leixões Oil Terminal", which will soon be on display at the cruise terminal for public visit.
To maintain its preponderant role in the country not only in the energy supply to the northern part of Portugal but also in ensuring an increase in national exports, Galp Energia has upgraded the terminal with investments focused on reliability, safety and environment, APDL said.
Started in 2005, the requalification involved the replacement of the loading arms of the three posts of the terminal, as well as all the pipes, electrical network and firefighting system.
